“I—”
She held up her hand. “I know, Chase.” She smiled gently. “You want me safe but can’t tell me
why.”
“I’ll feel better if I know you’re with Kathy.”
“And the security at her house.”
Chase nodded. “With Casey.”
Grace nodded. “I trust you have a reason for all of this and that you’ll tell me when you get
home.”
“I’ll do my best, Mom.”
“Home with Sabrina?” she asked softly.
Chase swallowed over the huge lump that formed in his throat. “Yeah.” He blinked as his eyes
burned with tears. “I used to worry what Sabrina would do if something happened to me, but it seems
it’s the opposite now.” He hung his head and squeezed his eyes shut. “What if I can’t get her back?”
Chase heard movement and a moment later, his mother’s arms were around him. He hugged her
hard, his body shaking. She kissed his cheek and rubbed his back.
After a long moment, he pulled away. She searched his eyes and gave him a sad smile. “It’ll be
okay.”
“What if it’s not?”
She shook her head. “All you can do is what you can do. Focus on that and accept what happens.
The only regret you’ll have is if you didn’t do everything you could.”
Chase stood in a sea of white fog. In the distance, a small figure huddled.
Sabrina!
He hurried over to her and kneeled behind her, wrapping himself around her. She
trembled and clung to his arms.
“Sabrina, where are you? Where can I find you?”
She turned and the sadness in her eyes made his heart shatter into a million pieces. “I
miss you,” she whispered.
He cradled her cheek and leaned forward to kiss her gently. “I miss you, too. So much.”
He stared deeply into her eyes. “I will come for you.”
She looked away and then gasped as another figure appeared. A shadow in the distance.
