did Damian say to Lewis?”

“I didn’t hear much, but it sounded like they knew each other and were friendly.”

Chase stood and walked to the window. Was it possible an Elder had been compromised? He

thought back to the chaos in the country. All the cities of Elders were in chaos, save Tom’s and

Richard’s. He strode to the door. “I have to go talk to Richard.” He paused and looked at Lia. “Thank

you, Lia.”

She gave a jerky nod. “Are you leaving, too?” she asked Jayson.

“Do I need to?” Jayson asked.

Chase stared hard at Lia. “If you hurt him again . . .”

Her eyes widened. “I won’t,” she whispered. “I didn’t want to before.”

He glanced back at Jayson, who gave him a nervous smile. “Keep her here. It’s the only place

she’s safe right now.”

Jayson nodded. “Thanks.”

Chase nodded once, his lips pressed together. “Patrick can give you a ride home, when you’re

ready.” He left the room and reached for his phone as he headed toward the front of the building.

Richard answered the phone a moment later. “Is everything all right?”

“I took Jayson to see Lia and—”

“I know.”

Of course he would. “She talked.”

“Really?”

“I think you should confirm what she told me by talking to her yourself, but I think she’s sincere.

Are you home?”

“Yes.”

“I’m coming over.” He trotted down the stairs and found Lance relaxing on the couch in the

cocktail room. “I need to go to Richard’s house.”

Lance hopped to his feet. “Let’s go.”

“You don’t have to go with me everywhere.”

Lance arched a brow. “I promised your wife I’d watch out for you. I’m not breaking my promise.”

Richard paced his office as Chase recounted everything Lia had told him and then stared at the

crackling fire in the fireplace for a long time.
