everything, but I know he wants control. Of everything. And revenge on someone.”
“Do you know who?”
She shook her head. “He mentioned the name once, but I don’t remember. It was an unusual
name.”
Who could Damian, an ancient, evil Elder, want revenge on in this modern age?
“What else do you know?”
“He’s powerful,” she whispered. “He’s evil.” She shook her head and sighed. “You have to
understand, Damian wasn’t always like this. He was sweet and kind and quiet when I was little. Even
though he was so much older and I was the baby of the family, he always took care of me. We were
together a lot. There were five others in between us, but Father kept me and Damian apart from them.
I never understood why.” A tear slipped down her cheek. “Father was strict with both of us but in
different ways. We knew we were different from our brothers and sisters, but I didn’t know why until
the night Father took Damian ‘to his destiny,’ as Father said.” She shivered. “My father brought me to
him a few days later. Said I would serve him.” She shuddered and stared at the bed. “I was excited
until I saw him. It wasn’t my brother sitting there in that chair. It looked like him but it wasn’t him.”
She looked down at her hands. “I became his play toy and it hurt so much. Once he started getting
other girls, it was easier, because I wasn’t his only target.” She closed her eyes. “But then he started
bringing other men and it got hard again.” She swallowed and opened her eyes again. “When he came
here, it was him again. It was my brother and that monster was gone.” Her eyes closed again. “But he
came back.”
Jayson took her hand and squeezed it. She looked up at him with red, wet eyes. “I’m sorry,
Jayson,” she said, her voice hoarse. “I’m sorry I hurt you.” Tears streamed down her face. “I’m so
sorry.”
Chase sat down in the chair near the window and pressed his knuckles to his forehead. So,
Damian really had been different when he’d been in Boston. He hadn’t been wrong. There was little
comfort in the knowledge, though. “Do you know what he’s doing with Sabrina?” Chase asked.
“No. I heard her name a lot, but honestly, I tried not to listen when he talked about his plans.” She
wiped her cheeks. “At first I did, but it hurt, knowing my brother was gone . . . taken over by this
monster.”
“I can imagine that would be hard,” Chase said softly. He met Jayson’s gaze and nodded. Jayson
