Gathering was in two weeks in Northern California. “Does Richard know?”

“I spoke with him before I called you.”

Of course Alex would tell Richard before Chase. He was the Elder. “What did he say?”

“Not much. I think he was in shock.”

“I bet.” Chase felt it too. “Are you coming back to Boston when you finish there?”

“I need to discuss it with my father, but we will be at the Gathering if the rumors are true.”

They said goodbye and Chase looked at Ethan. “At least we know for sure who we’re fighting. I

think.”

“YOU SURE YOU WANNA SEE HER?” CHASE ASKED AS HE AND J AYSON WALKED THROUGH THE MANOR

toward Lia’s room.

Jayson nodded. “I need to see her.” They walked up the stairs. “Has she been talking?”

“No.”

They walked the remaining distance in silence. A man in black clothing stood guard at a door at

the end of the hallway. “My lord,” he said to Chase with a bow. “You want to see her?”

“Yes, please, Avery.”

Avery produced a key and unlocked the door, then stepped aside. Chase pushed open the door.

Lia lay on the large bed facing away from the door. She was curled into a ball and didn’t move as

they walked in.

“Lia?” Chase said, glancing at Jayson, whose eyes had turned sad.

Lia didn’t respond.

“Jayson’s here.”

She stiffened but didn’t turn around. “I don’t want to see him,” she said in a soft voice.

“I wanted to see you,” Jayson said, walking around the bed.

Chase nodded to Jayson and leaned against the door, watching Lia carefully. He’d visited once,

and Richard had spoken to her a few times, but they could learn nothing from her, other than the fact

that she was terrified.

“Why?” Lia asked.

Jayson sighed. “Why did you do it?”

“Did they send you in to talk to me?”
