Chase swallowed.

Ethan looked at Sabrina, a contemplative look on his face. He looked back at the ceiling and

closed his eyes. Chase could feel the tension rising in him.

Sabrina watched Ethan pace the room, hands behind his back, fists clenched, staring at the floor.

Chase sat on the bed, staring at the door.

She’d been awake for almost a half-hour and Ethan hadn’t said a word. When she asked Chase

what was going on, he just shook his head sadly. She didn’t know what to do. They were both

distressed and unwilling to share. What had they talked about while she slept? Was Ethan having

second thoughts about becoming her guardian? Why all of a sudden would he? Had he and Chase

argued?

She sighed and played with the hem of her skirt. The tension between the two men was

unbearable.

Ethan paused, stared at her for a long moment, and then sighed. He gave a weary smile, walked

over and kissed her forehead, and then went to Chase. “I’ll do it.”

Chase’s eyebrows went up. “Are you sure?”

Ethan nodded. “I don’t know for sure what you’re gonna do, but whatever it is . . .” He lifted his

chin. “I can take it.”

Chase pulled him in for a hug and Sabrina relaxed. She didn’t know what had happened, but it

was resolved now.

“Thank you,” Chase said, holding Ethan’s upper arms.

Someone knocked on the door and Alex popped his head in. “Ethan, we need to get you ready.”

Ethan gave a sharp nod, took a deep breath, and followed Alex out of the room.

“What’s going on, Chase?” Sabrina asked once the door closed. “Why is he upset?”

Chase ran his hands over his face and shook his head. “He thinks he knows what’s going to

happen.” He gave Sabrina a sad look. “It’s going to be so much worse.”

“What’s going to happen?”

He stared at the floor. “I have to force him to do something he swore he’d never do.”

“Why?”

“Because in order to become a guardian, you have to prove you’d do anything to keep your charge

safe.”
