“Do you think she’s in more danger now?”

“I hope not. Ethan knows to be extra vigilant now that we’re engaged. Not that he needed

reminding.” Chase smiled, remembering Ethan’s eye roll when he mentioned it. “But he’ll protect her

with his life.”

“Of course he will.” She smiled and Chase tilted his head. “He loves both of you. Why would you

think he wouldn’t sacrifice himself for either of you?”

“I didn’t mean to pry,” his mother said gently.

He turned back to his mother and studied her face. There was no judgment in her expression, only

curiosity. He sighed. “Yeah. Ethan. He’s . . .” It’s not like he’d moved in with Chase because they

wanted to “be together.” It just was convenient after they started working together. Ethan didn’t want

to go back to Texas, and Chase didn’t want to live alone. The other guys had their own lives, and he
