odd angles.

“Chase!” Sabrina screamed and wrenched away from Ethan. He called after her, but she ignored

him. She slowed as she approached her beloved. His torso and the sides of his face were raw from

burns and blood poured from his temple. An angry, bloody wound in his side made her wince. She

wanted to wrap her arms around him but feared she’d hurt him. “Chase?” she asked, her voice soft.

He gave her a weary smile. “I’m okay,” he said in a hoarse voice and tried to straighten, but

slumped against the firefighters again.

Sabrina stared, not knowing what to do. The firefighters guided him to a nearby ambulance, and

she followed. Ethan appeared at her side and wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

While the medics attended to his wounds, Chase looked up at Sabrina. “Why don’t you have a

warmer coat on?” he asked just before a man put an oxygen mask on his face.

“I’m lucky she thought of a coat at all,” Ethan said, a wry smile on his face. “She wanted to run

the entire way here, but I stopped her.”

Chase’s eyebrows raised. He shook his head, eyes soft, and reached out his blackened hand.

Sabrina jumped forward and grasped the dirty hand tightly.

“I was so worried about you,” she whispered, tears in her eyes. Chase squeezed her hand.

“I think I see your mom,” Ethan said. “I’ll go tell her you’re okay.”

Chase nodded and Ethan disappeared into the mass of people and trucks. The fire was nearly out

now, and the streets were wet and growing icy in the freezing air. Someone put a blanket on Sabrina’s

shoulders and she pulled it around her body. Now that Chase was here, the freezing air made her

shiver.

“Miss, can you step back, please?” The medic glanced at her, holding a piece of gauze.

She looked at Chase, who nodded with reassuring eyes, and she let go of his hand to move a few

feet back. She watched as the two men cleaned Chase’s raw forehead and face. Chase winced as they

tended to him. The cut on his side was long and jagged. It wasn’t bleeding much, but it was red and

angry looking.

“What happened?” one of them asked, reaching for more gauze.

Chase shrugged, still wearing the mask, but Sabrina saw something in his eyes that concerned her.

She opened her mouth to protest, but Chase shook his head. She pressed her lips together and

swallowed. She didn’t like him looking worried.
