Sabrina stared, open-mouthed. “What happened?”

Khyan shook his head. “He was not really alive. He was, and he was not. He was an extension of

Vamar’s will.”

Kronos nodded to Khyan and Khyan moved to the platform to stand next to Theo and Sebastian.

Both greeted him respectfully.

Kronos’ face was solemn and held the hint of a frown. “You have allowed a great evil to take

control, Elders.”

Chase shuddered along with the others, though he’d only been an Elder for a day.

“You have solved your issue and I approve of your method.” Kronos nodded to Chase. “But this is

the second time in a decade this has happened. My Daughters have been abused. You have let

yourselves become deceived.” He frowned. “The purpose of an Elder is to keep watch over your

world and prevent this from happening. You have failed.”

The men were silent. Chase could feel their fear and doubts.

“The time of Elders has passed,” Kronos said, staring out across the men in their black robes. “It

is time to allow the humans to rise and fall on their own.”

He brought his arms up into the air and the men around him started grabbing their heads. Chase

frowned until he felt it in his own head. A burning in his veins that moved upward until his mouth

opened of its own volition and golden breath escaped. It floated above the crowd for a minute before

dissipating into the air.

“Your Immortalness has been removed,” Kronos said. “You are no longer Elders.”

Some of them fell to their knees and stared at the ground. Chase rubbed at his chest, feeling the

emptiness in his veins.

Sabrina squeezed his hand. “Are you okay?”

He nodded. “I think so.”

Kronos spoke again. “Marital bonds are broken.”

Chase squeezed his eyes closed and held his head. His mind spun, and he felt the snap as the bond

between him and Sabrina was severed. He clenched his jaw at the ache in his heart.

“You are still married, humans,” Kronos said with a gentle smile. “According to the human laws

in your lands. But the bond forged in the Manor is removed.”

Chase couldn’t keep the tears from falling as he disconnected from Sabrina.
