cold blood.” He raised his sword into the air. “I am the Elder of the Seven Realms, and I do condemn
you to death.” He arced the sword down and plunged it into Damian’s chest.
Damian screamed and a whirlwind pushed Chase back. He grabbed Sabrina’s arm, yanking her
away from Damian. She screamed and grabbed her head, squeezing her eyes shut as the wind
whipped her hair around wildly. Chase’s robes snapped at his legs. He pulled Sabrina to him and
turned away from the wind, protecting her with his body.
Chase squeezed his eyes shut as Damian gave a last scream that was swallowed up by the wind.
Silence.
Chase turned to look at Damian’s gray and lifeless body.
Chase’s sword had disappeared.
Kronos walked over and kneeled, tears in his eyes. “I would have given you another chance if it
would have done any good, my son.” He waved his hand and the body turned to ashes. A gentle
breeze scattered them away through the grass and into the trees.
Kronos turned to Chase and Sabrina. “It is over.”
The pain in Sabrina’s head ebbed away until all she felt was Chase’s arms around her. She trembled
and clung to him. He tightened his hold on her. Her mind felt clear for the first time in months and she
exhaled slowly, feeling as light as air itself.
Chase kissed her head and pulled away. “Are you okay?” he asked, peering into her eyes.
She smiled, the first genuine smile, it felt like, in ages. “I am.” She kissed his lips and then
snuggled back against his chest.
But then she remembered Ethan and a sob escaped her mouth. She clung to Chase as her knees
gave way and he held her tight. She could feel his grief as keenly as her own and she wondered if they
would ever recover.
A heavy hand lay on her head and she looked up to see Kronos standing over them, his eyes
reflecting the grief in her own heart. “His death was not in vain, my children,” Kronos said softly.
“His death gave you, Chase, the strength to defeat your enemy. Ethan would be proud of you. He
loved you both very much.” Kronos kissed each of their heads and a soothing warmth spread through
her body. “I will ease the ache of your loss, though nothing will ever take it away completely.”
Sabrina let out a long breath as her heart healed a tiny bit. She nodded thanks and leaned her head
against Chase’s chest.
