hurt and pain and sorrow. Kronos would take care of her. She would rule at his side with all wisdom

and kindness. And watch the earth from afar.

But no love. At least not love as she’d known it at home. This place had been built on love, but a

different kind. Not human love, with all its nuances and risks.

She looked up into Kronos’ crystalline eyes, full of the purest kind of love. He was perfection

personified. Perfect love, perfect confidence, perfect judgment.

“Why me?” she asked.

“It has been two millennia since I have found a worthy companion, Sabrina.” He caressed her

cheek. “I would be honored to have you by my side.”

“You’ve had them before?”

Kronos nodded. “She perished a long time ago. In the Great War.”

Sabrina lifted her hand to his face and he kneeled before her. “You loved her very much.”

Kronos nodded.

She caressed his cheek, but another face crossed her thoughts. A face with gray eyes and a scar

running down his cheek. And her heart broke.

The man who loved her and saved her. The man who risked everything for her.

And she knew.

Kronos smiled and caressed her cheek. “I am glad you chose him, my Daughter. We will have our

time here, but you are needed on earth for now. You have chosen wisely.”

She closed her eyes and a moment later the cool night air lifted goosebumps on her arms. She

opened her eyes and saw Chase, still standing with his arms outstretched.

She ran to him and wrapped her arms around his waist. “Oh, Chase. My Chase!”

“Sabrina!” He buried his face in her hair. “Oh, my love.” He kissed her hair, her cheeks, his hands

tangled in her hair and he kissed her mouth, tears streaming down his face.

She leaned back, searching his face. “What’s wrong?” She searched his eyes. They were full of

love, but something else. Loss. Tremendous loss. Not only losing her but—

Her breath caught in her chest as his emotions poured from him. Such grief . . . “No . . .” She

shook her head and looked behind him to where men in white stood apart from those in black robes.

She saw Alex and Anna. She saw Lance and Corey and Matt. Her jaw trembled. “Where’s Ethan?”

she whispered.
