appeared in his hands, blocking the blow and he twisted away.
“Did your Immortal toys teach you to fight?”
“They’re not my Immortals,” Chase growled, swinging his sword at Damian who jumped back. “I
own no one.”
“That’s your problem, Chase.” Damian swung and Chase moved aside. “You’re not interested in
taking full advantage of your situation.”
Chase circled Damian, looking for an opening. “People want to be around me because they like
me, not because I tell them to.”
Damian’s face contorted again and he swung furiously at Chase. Chase easily blocked each blow,
moving back as he needed to. Let Damian expend his energy as Chase conserved his. Then he’d have
an advantage.
Metal clangs and fiery whooshes filled his ears. Their swords became streaks of fire as each man
swung and blocked. Chase didn’t back down and Damian couldn’t find an opening.
The men in the field had long ago fled to the edges, and Damian and Chase moved around the
grass, fiery arcs between them.
When Chase sensed Damian falter, he started fighting offensively. He pushed Damian back with
his blows, one by one until Damian tripped on his robe and fell.
“Sabrina!” Damian shouted.
A blow struck Chase’s side and he moved into defensive mode against Sabrina, her eyes wild.
She held a sword of a size he couldn’t imagine her wielding unless she was in this Immortal state.
Wide arcs pushed Chase back more and more. “Sabrina,” he said breathlessly as her sword met
his. “Sabrina, stop fighting me. I’m your husband. I love you.”
If she heard him, she didn’t show it. Over and over again she swung precisely, hitting Chase’s
sword. He didn’t know what to do except to keep defending himself. But would she run out of energy?
He’d been fighting for a while, she was fresh. And powerful. Chase winced as his sword vibrated in
his hand.
He had to do something. She was robotic and unemotional. He had to get through to her.
He turned and ran back a few steps, dropped his sword, and kneeled on the ground, arms out to
his sides.
She approached with trepidation, sword in front of her, eyes narrowed in suspicion.
