body trembled.

He closed his eyes, imagining what was to come, wishing Ethan was here with him. He imagined

Ethan smiling and shaking his head as Chase tried to explain how he felt. Ethan sitting next to him and

kissing him.

He sighed and closed his eyes. The pain of Ethan’s death had settled into a dull ache, thanks to

Anna. He felt it, but it was manageable. For the moment. The pain would certainly return when this

was all over. If he survived.

His thoughts turned to Sabrina. Did she know Ethan was dead? Had she felt it? Could she even

feel it, being transformed as she was?

He thought back to when he’d told Sabrina about Ethan’s childhood abuse and how she’d been

ready to run out and avenge him. Surely she would feel even stronger about his death. Should he tell

her? Would it make her turn on Damian?

It seemed a cruel way to get through to her, but Chase wouldn’t throw the option away. Ethan

wouldn’t want him to. Anything to get her back.

Chase spent the next few hours in the back of the camp by himself, learning the feel of the Immortal

essence flowing through his body. He closed his eyes, listening to the sound of the ants gathering food

nearby and feeling the sun move across the sky overhead.

He opened his eyes and held out his hand. A fiery orb appeared and it danced across his

fingertips. He balanced it on the back of his fingers, the blue flames tickling his skin.

“You are learning quickly,” a voice said from behind.

The orb disappeared and he jumped to his feet. Sebastian and Theo stood there, approving smiles

on their faces.

“I’m getting used to it,” Chase said. He held out his hand and the orb appeared again. He laughed.

“It’s kinda cool.”

Theo chuckled and shook his head. “You humans have the strangest terminology.”

Sebastian planted his feet and a flaming broadsword appeared in his hand. “Do you know how to

fight?”

“Usually just with my hands or guns.”

“You must learn to wield the fire sword, Chase,” Theo said. “It is important to be able to defend

yourself against Vamar. Your body is protected from human weapons with the Immortal essence, but
