“Where are Theo and Sebastian?” Chase asked Alex.

“Pleading our case to Kronos.”

Kronos. The Father of the Immortals. If Vamar was truly back, wouldn’t he want to be involved?

Wouldn’t he want to stop him again? Surely he could come in and make everything better right away?

He’d blessed his marriage to Sabrina. He’d come to her aid in Tokyo. Couldn’t he bring her back to

Chase?

But that’s not how Kronos worked, as Alex had told him many times. Humans had to work out

their own problems.

Chase moved the cooked bacon onto a metal platter and carried it to the table. He stared at the

burned pieces, eyes burning. Ethan had always given him a hard time about liking burned bacon.

A heavy hand on his shoulder made him look up. Alex stood next to him, a sad smile on his face.

“It will get easier. It will take time, but it will get easier.”

Chase pressed his lips together and sniffed. “Yeah.”

Once the eggs and potatoes were finished, the Elders broke for breakfast and then went back into

their meeting without sharing anything with anyone. Chase slumped back into a camp chair and stared

at the fire, his mind wandering to memories of Ethan. He tried to push away the memory of the

firestorm exploding out of Ethan’s chest, but the harder he tried, the more the memory sunk in. He

leaned forward and buried his face in his hands. Ethan!

“Chase,” Alex said softly.

Chase looked up and Alex motioned to the edge of camp where Lance, Corey, and Matt were

wincing as they walked past the stone barriers. He searched their sad faces. “Did you find him?”

Lance nodded. “Damian’s having his body guarded. We couldn’t get to him.” He swallowed hard

and shook his head. “Took us forever to find him.”

Corey blinked several times. “I’m just glad he’s left him at peace.”

“He didn’t do anything to the body?” Chase asked.

Matt shook his head. “Not that we could tell.”

Chase leaned back in his chair and let out a long breath of relief.

“It would likely wake Sabrina if she saw him,” Alex said. Chase turned to his friend, who gave a

sad smile. “Damian is not stupid. He will keep Sabrina from finding out her lover is dead by his

hand. His hold on her is strong, but not complete. Not as long as you are alive.”
