Alex squinted out into the darkness. “We wait for an opportunity.”

“What does that mean?”

Alex put his hand on his shoulder. “Have faith, my friend. We are not done yet.”

Chase leaned his head back against the metal bars and tried to ignore the screams from the field

and the pounding in his head. The guard had moved closer, and he knew Alex wouldn’t say anything

more. He prayed his German friend had a plan. Chase had no idea what to do next.

Chase drifted in and out of consciousness.

He heard a thud and the guard closest to him dropped to the ground. Another thud and another. The

three guards were on the ground. Dead.

Chase glanced at Alex, confused. His friend smiled. “It is time. Wake the others.”

“What’s going on?”

“Just wake them.” Alex moved around the circle of sleeping men and Chase followed suit.

He heard a low whistle, to which Alex responded. A moment later, nearly silent footsteps and a

familiar face shone in the starlight. “Ethan!”

He put his fingers to his lips. “C’mon. We don’t have much time.” He worked at the lock and the

gate opened. Alex and Chase waited until the others were out before following. Chase groaned as he

straightened and held his head. He stumbled but a strong arm caught him.

“You okay?” Ethan asked as they moved forward slowly. “You’re bleeding.”

“Sabrina zapped me again.”

“Ouch. Can you walk?”

“Yeah.” He stumbled again and Ethan caught him and let out a breathy chuckle. “We really need to

talk to her about—” Ethan’s eyes widened suddenly and he stumbled. Both men fell to the ground and

Chase heard a low cackle above him.

“When will you learn, Chase?”

Ethan was pulled away from him and Chase blinked. Damian stood above him, head tilted, an

amused smile on his face. He held Ethan by the back of the neck. Ethan was gasping for breath,

clutching his stomach. Only then did Chase see the gaping hole and blood.

“Ethan!” Chase screamed, reaching for him.
