“Chase.” Alex set aside his book and walked over. “A lesser man would have given up on her.

Chase shook his head.

“Is she worth it?” Tommy asked.

Chase stared at him. “How could you ask such a thing? Of course she is.”

“Think of it this way, Chase,” Alex said. “In a few days, you will have Sabrina and her Master

will be defeated. Or not. Either way, it will be over.”

“We win or we die, right?”

“That is the risk we take when we fight. We fight for more than your wife this time, though. We

fight for the survival of all that is good in this world. Isn’t that worth dying for?”

trenches below. Cloth pavilions for meeting and sleeping, two and three deep, lined the perimeter of

the field.

As planned, the US Elders had begun the Gathering earlier in the evening. Brandon stood at the

front of the platform and spoke about the great civilization that would rise from the ashes of the

current strife. And, oh, was it strife! All the Elders under his control had ensured chaos all over the
