confidence he would return home at the end.
This weekend he wasn’t confident of anything.
Yes, he’d prepared the best he could, as had Richard and Tom. Tommy, Alex, Wilhelm, and the
German Elders would be there. So would Vlad, the Elder of St. Petersburg who held Devin, and his
nephew, Peter. Vlad was fairly certain the other Russian Elders had been compromised.
These were his only allies.
Ten Elders against hundreds.
Fourteen humans against the biggest evil in history.
The end was near.
Evil was coming.

CHASE GRABBED HIS JACKET , READY TO WALK OUT THE DOOR OF HIS S AN F RANCISCO HOTEL ROOM FOR
the Thursday night Elder dinner when someone knocked on the door. He opened it to find Richard
with a frown on his face.
“They’ve canceled the dinner.”
Chase stepped aside and Richard walked inside. “Why?”
“Tom and I spoke with the others earlier in the afternoon.” Richard walked to the window. “The
lines have been drawn. The Elders know Tom and I will not side with them.” He turned to face
Chase. “It has begun.” He pursed his lips. “Brandon and Javier have sided with them. Tom tried to
talk to them, but they won’t answer their phones when he calls. I don’t understand why they fought so
hard against Devin only to stand with Damian.”
“So what do we do?”
“I called Wilhelm before I came over. They’re leaving as soon as they can. We’ll meet in the
morning instead of tomorrow night as originally planned. There’s no point in waiting.”
Chase sat down hard on the couch. He’d been hoping for the element of surprise.
“You may want to call Ethan and let him know what’s going on,” Richard said with a knowing
smile.
“How did you—”
“They wouldn’t let you come out here by yourself.”
“I didn’t even know they’d made their own plans until last night.”
