Chase laughed and shook his head. “You amaze me. Did the others put you up to this?”
“No. Not exactly. But they figured if anyone could get through to you, it’d be me.”
Chase froze. “Why?”
“Chase, they’re not stupid. They know about us.”
“Us? Our relationship?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Shit. Were they upset?”
“Only that we weren’t honest about it. I explained why things happened the way they did. They
understood.”
“So they know you’re not sleeping in a cot in here?”
“Yeah. Not that it matters.”
“What does that mean?”
He could feel Ethan’s heavy gaze. “We haven’t been together since Sabrina left.”
Chase inhaled deeply. “You’re right.” He’d thought about it a couple of times, but it didn’t seem
right without her. “Did you want to?” he asked slowly.
“I think it might have helped both of us deal with shit if we had.” Ethan reached out and put his
hand on Chase’s thigh.
Chase felt a rush of desire and sucked in a breath.
“You’re leaving tomorrow. I honestly have wondered if you’ll make it back.” Ethan’s voice
cracked on the last word.
“Me, too,” he said in a low voice.
The mattress trembled and Chase felt Ethan’s body heat. “Then say goodbye to me properly.”
Thursday morning, Chase settled into his first-class seat for the long flight to San Francisco and
closed his eyes. What would this weekend hold? Regardless of what happened, life would change
after this, for good or bad. He had to hope it would be for the good, but his stomach churned with
nerves. What if it didn’t go the way they hoped? What if evil won? Life, the world, would be over as
he knew it.
Would he even survive the weekend?
Every trip he made held the risk he would not return home at the end. That was the choice he
made when he joined the army and started his own business after. But he always had a level of
