what happened and what might happen. The future was the hardest to imagine. What if he never saw
Sabrina again? What if he did but she was permanently changed?
He didn’t know if he could live with himself if that were true.
A knock on the door made him pause. “Who is it?”
“Alex.”
Chase let out a sigh of relief. The German had been with the Elders in their meetings that morning
and Chase had been dying to know what was going on. “Come in.”
Alex walked inside and looked around. Clothes were strewn about. A broken vase and a few
dishes had taken the brunt of Chase’s frustration that morning.
Alex gave him a sad smile. “How are you doing?”
“Depends on the moment.” Chase motioned to the mess in the room.
“I understand.” He strode across the room and sat down on the couch in the middle of the room.
“What happened at the meeting?” Chase asked, perching gingerly on the edge of the bed.
“They are divided. Some think we should be proactive and push Damian to reveal himself and his
plans. Others believe we should wait and see.”
“What do you think?”
Alex was quiet for a long time. “We do not know what he has planned or what he wants.” He
chewed his lip. “I know you want to act, but I think at the moment, it is wiser to wait.”
“Wait!”
“What would you do, Chase? We don’t know where he is. Where Sabrina is. What could you
possibly do?”
Chase fisted his hair. “I can’t just sit here and do nothing.”
“Inaction is the hardest thing to deal with. I completely understand.”
Chase opened his mouth, intending to say something harsh, but stopped the words before they
escaped. Of all the people in the world, Alex was the one person who understood how he felt, who
had been in his position. “What would you do?” he asked, shoulders slumping in defeat.
“Study. Prepare myself.” He gave a wry smile. “Heal.”
Alex had a point. Chase would be no good to Sabrina if he was banged up and unable to do
anything physically.
