God, was he even worthy of her? What kind of man was he to not be able to protect the woman he
loved? This was the third time since they’d met she’d been taken. Only once had he been able to
rescue her. She’d walked away voluntarily this time. How did you rescue someone who didn’t want
to be rescued?
Lance pulled into the parking lot of a drugstore and went inside to get first aid supplies. At a
nearby park, they fixed themselves up as best they could. Then they drove back to Boston, empty-
handed, heart-broken, and at a loss as to what to do next.
Chase winced as he shifted in bed. Alone. With Lance in the house, Ethan couldn’t risk coming up to
the master suite aside from helping him into bed. His heart ached, both for Sabrina and Ethan. He’d
never felt so alone, so defeated. Maybe they should just tell Lance and be done hiding it.
But he couldn’t risk alienating his friend. He needed his team intact if he was going to get Sabrina
back. Ethan understood, but it didn’t take away the ache.
The sun was low in the sky and weird shadows played along the wall as it set. Still, he couldn’t
sleep. His thoughts were consumed with worry about Sabrina and trying to figure out how the hell
Neil was still alive.
A knock at the door made him jump and then groan. Chase called out and the door opened,
revealing a disapproving Richard. Chase grunted as he sat up.
Richard raised his eyebrows and Chase slowly dragged himself to his feet and trudged across the
room.
Going down the stairs to the living room was slow and painful, and when he finally arrived,
Richard had already settled himself on the couch. “I hear you went to DC.”
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Why do you think?”
