He sunk down to the ground, knees to his chest, and buried his face in his hands. Sabrina!

His chest ached like he’d been stabbed a dozen times with a dull, ragged knife. His hands were

cold, his chest was hot. One minute his heart pounded with anger and determination. The next it

barely beat at all and Chase wished it would stop all together.

The heavy door to the garage opened and Chase looked up to see Ethan standing in the doorway.

“What happened?”

“Sabrina.” Chase’s voice was so raspy he wondered if he could hear him.

Ethan looked around, lifting his chin to peer into the windshield of the SUV. “Where is she?”

Chase stared at a pile of dust between his feet.

“Chase?”

He wondered how the pile had ended up there, so neat with no other specks close by.

“Chase!”

Maybe ants had brought it in. Was it an anthill?

A bare foot stepped on the pile and Chase looked up dumbly. Ethan stared down at him, eyes hard.

“What the hell is going on, Chase? Where’s Sabrina?”

Chase opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. His jaw trembled, and he waved his

hands helplessly in the air.

Ethan’s face paled, and he slumped down to the ground, his bare back scraping against the

drywall.

They stared at each other for a long moment. Chase blinked and looked away, chest burning. It

was his fault Sabrina wasn’t here with them. He should have watched over her better.

“Who?” Ethan choked out.

“Damian,” Chase whispered.

The overhead lights timed out and Chase stared into the darkness.
