“I’m her Master.” Chase winced as he said the word, but if it got him into the meeting, he’d use it.

“And I’m trying to keep that fact out of the discussion. It would not help her case this morning.”

Chase clenched his jaw. He knew how the Elders felt last night. He could imagine their emotions

running even higher this morning. “You have to protect her.”

“I will. Try not to worry.”

Chase didn’t respond.

“I’m trusting you to remain where you are and not interfere. I shouldn’t have called you.”

Something in his voice caught Chase’s attention.

“What do they want to do?” he asked, swallowing hard.

“I’ll call you when we’re done.” The phone clicked, and the call ended.

Chase stared at his phone. He couldn’t sit here alone while this was happening. He dressed

quickly and then took the elevator to Alex’s floor.

Alex answered his knock within seconds, a concerned look on his face. “Did Richard call you?”

Chase nodded.

“Vati called me. Told me I should go find you and keep you calm.”

Had Wilhelm told Alex what was going on? “Why?” he croaked, his stomach churning.

“They are calling for Sabrina to appear and they are not happy.”

“I know that. Is she . . . Is she in danger?”

“She might be.”

Sabrina beamed at Ethan as she swept off the “stage” of the upstairs studio and into the hallway

beyond. She had about twenty minutes before her next dance and had to change costumes.

He beamed back. “Wonderful as usual,” he said, hugging her to his side.

They headed to a smaller studio down the hallway that had been set up for costume changes and a

waiting area for the dancers. She nodded to Micah as he headed toward the performing area dressed

in dark green tights and nothing else.

Sabrina smiled at Ethan, who walked beside her. Suddenly he stuck his arm out and pushed her

behind him. She peered around his arm. Up ahead, past the door to the studio, a tall figure stood,

cloaked in shadow.

Something feels familiar . . .
