pursed her lips. “Why are you angry with Chase?”
He gave a small laugh. “Sometimes your abilities are annoying.” The smile on his face kept her
from taking his words too seriously. “I’m worried about him and he doesn’t seem to take the danger
that he’s in seriously.”
Sabrina looked away. Someone—her Master—had tried to kill him. Again. She couldn’t bear the
thought of something happening to Chase, especially since it would be her fault that it happened. “I
understand,” she said softly, cupping his cheek. And she did.
Chase stared at the dark ceiling, thinking about what Ethan had said. He understood why Ethan
wanted someone watching him as much as he watched Sabrina, but could anyone have stopped what
happened to him here? Hell, he didn’t even know it had happened until after. He, Nigel, and several
other Sons, including Alex, had drank until late and then he’d returned to his room.
Would bringing Lance or one of the other guys in to guard him really have prevented anything? If
someone had been with him at his condo, who knows if they would have survived. Sabrina’s other
Master might have killed him outright.
He honestly didn’t know what to do. He understood Ethan’s worries; they mirrored his own. But
how could someone protect him from a supernatural attack? Sabrina was vulnerable in her sleep, she
needed someone next to her. Ethan could protect her from bodily harm. She couldn’t protect herself
unless she raged, but then would be a danger to anyone around. Chase could fight off his own
attackers.
His phone buzzed on the nightstand. Sabrina. “Hello love,” he answered in a tired voice. It was
almost one in the morning.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. How are you doing?”
“Tired, but okay.”
“Is Ethan furious at me?”
She hesitated. “I don’t know if I’d use that word.”
“Is he next to you?”
“Yes.”
He sighed. “I’m okay.”
“Okay.”
