so slightly and Chase swallowed. Nigel was a good-looking guy. He hadn’t thought about the normal

Funeral Gathering. This time his thoughts strayed to Ethan. He had both a man and a woman in his life

to consider now. But in The Brotherhood, nothing was normal. Ethan wasn’t the jealous type. He

knew what happened at Gatherings.

“You look lost in thought.”

Chase blinked and looked at Nigel, whose eyes were lit with curiosity. “Sorry. It’s been a long

day.”

“Well, let’s get another drink and you can tell me all about your girl.”

The next evening, while sitting in the Tokyo Manor’s Gathering Hall, Chase rubbed his neck and

shook his head, which made it pound. His head had been hurting all day, but it had grown worse as

time wore on.

He squinted up at the platform. He could barely see what was happening, though he knew the new

Tokyo Elder was being fucked by an Immortal and being attended to by the Elder-Mistresses. It was

his first experience at an Elder Funeral and he thought he would find it interesting, but in all honestly,

he just wanted to close his eyes and go to sleep.

“Are you okay?” Alex, who sat next to him in his white robes, gave him a concerned look. “Your

face is going gray.”

“I don’t feel well,” Chase said in a low voice. His stomach cramped and he winced.

Alex’s brows furred. “You look like shit. I didn’t think we drank that much last night.”

“Alex!” Wilhelm rebuked in a loud whisper.

Chase pressed his lips together and stared at the floor, trying to keep his mind from wandering too

far from the present. He closed his eyes and breathed deeply. He rarely got sick. Maybe he’d caught

the flu?

The room erupted in a cheer and Chase jumped. He looked up and saw the new Japanese Elder

standing with a younger version of himself next to him and the other Elders were cheering.

The formal air disappeared into a cloud of lust as the Elders started talking and . . . other things.

Chase swallowed over a lump in his throat, but it wasn’t an emotional lump. His throat was closing

up. He tried to stand, but his legs wouldn’t support him and he stumbled, only to be caught by Alex.

He stared up at the big German, his mouth moving, but he couldn’t form a cohesive thought. Alex’s

mouth moved, but the sound was muffled, like listening to someone talk while underwater.
