“Did something happen?”

He closed his eyes. “It was not what I expected.”

“What were you expecting?”

“Ramon had a brother, right?”

Sabrina’s brows knit together. Why was he bringing up her past? “Yes.”

“Castel?”

She nodded.

“I’m pretty sure he’s dead.”

She blinked. He said it so matter-of-factly she wasn’t certain she’d heard him right. “What?”

He shifted so he was facing her and put his hand gently on her cheek. “I’m pretty sure he’s dead,”

he repeated.

“How . . .” Sabrina didn’t know what to say. “I’m confused.”

Chase grimaced. “This job was . . .” He shook his head. “We were rescuing a kidnapped girl.

She’d been taken by a man named Castel DeSousa. I’m pretty sure it’s the same place you were kept.”

Sabrina stared. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She didn’t know what to

say.

“I didn’t know what the job was, or where it was until we got there. Sydney said something about

you and me getting revenge.”

“You rescued a girl?” she asked in a soft voice.

He nodded. “I beat the shit out of him when I saw him—When I saw what he was doing.”

“What was he doing?” She chided herself for asking. Did she want to know?

The look on Chase’s face told her everything. He told her about beating Castel and then rescuing

the other girls in the house.

Her mind spun. She was grateful, so grateful, Chase had rescued that girl, but part of her was sad

that he hadn’t been able to do the same for her.

Or had he?

She thought back to when Neil had kidnapped her and how Chase had broken in and saved her—

in so many ways. Her heart lightened, and she put her hand on his cheek. “You’re a good man, Chase,”

she said and leaned up to kiss him. After a long moment, she pulled away. “But what does that have to

do with you coming home early?”
