“Ethan’s okay, right?”

Chase nodded. “He’s fine.” He cupped her cheek. “Really.”

She searched his eyes. “What did you want to talk to me about?” It had something to do with

Ethan. She could feel it.

“I talked with Theo and Richard while you were showering. They came up with a solution of how

to keep you safe when I have to travel.”

“I thought you weren’t going to anymore.”

“You and I both know that’s an impossible promise to keep. Even if I gave up my company, there

are still Brotherhood duties that would take me out of town when you weren’t available to leave.”

She nodded slowly. Of course. She couldn’t miss a performance. She wouldn’t do that to Martin

or the ballet company. “Is it possible to be safe? I don’t want him to take me away from you again.”

She leaned her head against his chest and shivered at the idea of going through all that torture again.

“There is. It’s an ancient method of assigning a guardian to an Elder’s wife. Or Elder-Son’s wife,

in our case.”

“I thought all the ancient ways were forbidden.”

“Most of them aren’t so much forbidden as forgotten.” He laughed. “Richard called Alex and got

some information from him.”

“Alex?”

“He had to study all that old stuff when he was fighting for Anna. He’s the only ancient expert

around at the moment.”

“Oh.”

“He’ll be in town later tonight.”

“Is Anna coming?”

“Unfortunately, no. She has a performance, I think.”

“Oh.” Sabrina tapped her fingers on her leg. “Ethan will become my guardian? How does that

work?”

Chase explained the purpose of the guardian and how Ethan could keep her safe when Chase

wasn’t around. Sabrina’s mind started spinning. “That seems like a lot to ask of him.”

“I know. I feel the same way.”

Sabrina stared at the ground. It didn’t seem fair to ask that of Ethan. He’d be giving up his life.
