“I want you as Sabrina’s guardian.” Ethan turned and Chase saw his red eyes. “You’re my best
friend. We’ve been through so much together. Who else would I choose?”
“I thought Jayson was your best friend.”
“He is . . . in a simpler way. We’ve been friends since childhood, but . . . it’s different. You and
me, we’re . . .” Chase shook his head. “We’ve lived together. We’ve fought together. We’ve nearly
died together.”
Ethan lifted his chin.
“You love Sabrina as much as I do. I know you’d do anything for her. And me.” Chase let out a
breath. “But you have to know what you’re getting into.”
“I don’t need to know,” Ethan said behind clenched teeth. “I don’t care what I have to do. I want
to protect her.”
“Can I at least tell you what’s involved so you don’t get pissed when you find out?”
Ethan’s shoulders relaxed, and he let out a small chuckle. Chase did the same. They sat down at a
small table and Chase explained what he knew from Theo and Richard. Ethan listened intently,
nodding and raising eyebrows as each detail came out.
“So . . . I’d basically be married to you guys?”
Chase nodded.
“Why did you think I wouldn’t like that?”
“Don’t you want to get married someday and have a family of your own?”
“Aw, hell, Chase, you know what my childhood was like. I never had aspirations of anything like
that.” He shrugged. “Besides, how could I find someone half as amazing as Sabrina?”
Sabrina sat on the bench near the shower, towel drying her hair. She felt . . . weird. How else could
she feel after what she’d been through last night?
Her hand paused mid-squeeze as a black memory threatened to consume her. Her eyes started to
close, but she forced them open and walked to the window that overlooked the back alley. The house
across the way had a beautiful rooftop garden she liked to look at. Chase had promised her they’d
plant one when spring arrived.
She smiled. There were more pleasant things to dwell on than her horrible experience of last night
—like gardens and making love to her husband.
She’d dawdled in the shower, but the hot water had felt good against her skin. Theo had healed
