look happy about it.
Chase patted Ethan’s shoulder as he walked by and sat down next to Richard.
“You said she hadn’t had any nightmares since you’ve been married?” Richard asked and Chase
nodded. Richard glanced at Theo, who looked thoughtful.
“Her nightmares have always been a mystery, but after this incident, we now can safely assume
they are linked to her Master,” Theo said. “If they only came back while you were gone, the bond
between you two is working to protect her. You are keeping her Master away.”
“That’s good, right?”
“Yes, but there are times that you’ll need to be apart,” Richard said. “What will you do then?”
Chase frowned. “It’s not hard. I just won’t travel unless she can come along.”
“That’s a commendable sacrifice, Chase, but unrealistic. What if she has a performance and you
have out-of-town Elder duties?”
He opened his mouth to protest but then closed it and slumped back into the couch.
“And your work is important,” Richard said. “You need to keep helping people in your own way.”
Chase glanced at Ethan, who continued to study the carpet. He wished there was a way to give
Ethan the same ability to protect her as he had.
“Actually, Chase,” Theo said. “That is exactly what Richard and I were discussing before you
came down.”
“Is there a way?”
“Yes. But it will require an enormous sacrifice on Ethan’s part.”
Ethan’s head snapped up. “What about me?” His eyes turned earnest. “Is there a way for me to
make up fo—” He swallowed. “For me to help?”
Theo nodded. “There is, Ethan. But you cannot take it on lightly.”
Ethan frowned. “I don’t do anything lightly.”
“He didn’t mean it as an insult, Ethan,” Richard said. “But you’d be giving up a lot. And Chase
would have to agree to it.”
“I’d do anything to keep Sabrina safe.” Ethan turned to Chase. “You know that, right?” His eyes
watered.
“Of course I do.” What could he do to reassure Ethan that he wasn’t angry at him for what
happened? He turned back to Theo and Richard. “What is it?”
