“Do you know all that happened to me?” Sabrina asked.

“Bits and pieces. Chase and Alex talk a lot. They work together sometimes and have become

pretty close friends. Chase had asked us for advice on how to support you.” She smiled. “He loves

you so much, Sabrina. He is such a good man and worthy of you. Let him love you. Let him be your

strength when you feel weak. Let him carry you when your burdens are too great to bear on your own.

Trust that he is as good as you think he is. Let him be your hero.”

“He is,” Sabrina said softly. “It’s hard sometimes, though.”

Anna nodded. “It is. And he knows that. But marrying him—becoming his wife—will transform

you in ways you can’t imagine.”

Chase let out a sigh of relief when the two women walked back into the room a long time later.

Sabrina looked lighter than he’d ever seen her and he glanced at Alex, who gave him a knowing

smile.

She curled up on the couch next to him and kissed his cheek. “Thank you.”

“For what?”

She gave him a dimpled smile. “For being you.”

S ATURDAY EVENING , S ABRINA LAY ON THE COUCH IN HER DRESSING ROOM, HEAD RESTING ON CHASE’ S

lap, legs on Ethan’s. She should be getting ready, but Chase had stopped by to visit, and she couldn’t

bring herself to get up. He’d been at a Gathering the previous night, and she’d had a matinée

performance earlier that afternoon.

“Was it formal or informal last night?”

“Informal. Next week is the formal one. Usually the second Friday of the month.”

“Oh.”

He tilted his head and looked directly into her eyes. “I didn’t have sex with anyone.”

She chewed her lip. “It’s okay if you did.”

“I didn’t.”

“Did you want to?”

He studied her for a long moment. “Part of me did.”

She smiled, appreciating his honesty. “I’ve been thinking about that.”

He raised a brow. “About me having sex?”
