“But I’m more than half. And I’ve been with so many men and never became pregnant. They told
me—”
“Sabrina. They told me that, too, but I have children now. When it’s time, you will have children.
I promise you.”
Anna believed it, but Sabrina didn’t know if she believed Anna. “How were you hurt?” Sabrina
asked, then worried that she’d offended Anna, but the other woman’s face turned sad, not angry.
“Someone that I knew as a child betrayed me,” she said sadly. “My parents died when I was
young, and I was raised in a very abusive environment. If I hadn’t been Immortal . . . But that’s what
he liked about me. I could take anything and survive.” Anna motioned to the kitchen table. “Do you
want to sit?”
Sabrina nodded, and they moved to the modern white table and chairs. She felt a kinship with this
woman she’d just met. The pain in her eyes matched her own, and yet she was with a man who loved
her dearly. She had children. A trace of hope lit in her heart.
“Devin was . . .” Anna hesitated. “Evil. He wanted power and would do anything to achieve it.
He used me to get it. I helped him do terrible things . . .”
Anna told her story and Sabrina was captivated. It was so much like her own, and yet, so
different. They shared the same pain, and hope bubbled inside that perhaps she had the same strength.
The love story between her and her husband made Sabrina ache for Chase’s presence. Sabrina felt
Anna’s story in her heart, crying along with her when she cried and smiling along with her at her joys
and eventual triumph.
Anna grew quiet at the end. She chewed her lip for a few moments and then looked at Sabrina.
“It’s been many years but I still feel guilty sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m incredibly happy
where I am. Alex is the most amazing man in the world. He’s my hero. But sometimes I wonder how I
got to be so lucky.” She gave a little shrug and blinked a couple of times. “I caused so much pain to so
many people. I think it’s easier to forgive others than to forgive yourself.”
Sabrina knew that was true. She was blessed to have Chase in her life, but sometimes she still
doubted she was worthy of such an amazing man.
After a few moments, Anna reached out and squeezed Sabrina’s hand. “I want you to know that
it’s okay to be different. It’s okay to be a survivor. Our pasts make us who we are and we would be
so different if we’d walked a different path.”
