He passes me a glass of water, instructing me to take slow sips. Though Jaxon hasn’t knotted, he doesn’t pull out, gently massaging my tender hips.
Nestled between the two of them, and Caleb’s scent lingering on the pillows, my omega starts to relax.
Almost … content.
Chapter Nineteen
Jaxon
Faith’s heat lasts for days. Practically the whole fucking week. Just when we get her in the bath, convinced she’s finally done, her breath shudders, and she’s giving us those adorable fuck-me eyes.
Our only option is to take it in turns. Caleb and I are still working a case, after all—hell of a time to take heat and rut leave.
He’s normally gone first thing in the morning, then heads home around lunch to swap shifts. Even when I’m at headquarters, my thoughts inevitably return to her—her taut, lithe body, that sweet, blissed-out expression when she comes—but it doesn’t ruin my focus like I expected.
Knowing she’s home, in my den, fills me with purpose.
I’m going to find the assholes who locked my omega away.
And I’m going make them pay.
“Jesus Christ, man, could you at least try to keep it in your pants?” Maverick groans.
I sit up at my desk. “Excuse me?”
“Next time, wash your dick off before you get here. I can smell that sexy little omega’s heat all over you.”
“Excuse me?” I repeat, growling now.
“I’m just saying. Don’t gotta rub it in.”
The fucking nerve of this prick—talking about my omega like that, even thinking about her. He’s lucky I don’t throttle him right here in the bullpen.
“Hey, guys?” Sirena cuts in nervously.
Maverick looks up. “Mm?”
“Got a ping from one of the cameras on Fairweather Ave. Sewer grate—unauthorized tampering. Could be something.”
Suddenly Maverick is all business. “Which grate? I’ve got a guy near Fairweather—he might know something.”
“Go,” I say without hesitation. “I’ll tell Caleb.” This is the first lead, or possible lead, we’ve had all week. I’m not going to waste it.
Maverick grabs his jacket.
I’m texting Caleb before he’s even out of the building. I know it’s his turn with Faith right now, but her heat’s got to be done any minute, and besides … this could be important.
Come in when you can.
We might have something.

The whole squad is on edge. Even the worker drones—a couple fresh-faced recruits from New Caniss PD—seem to be holding their breath.
After all, it’s not every day they see the boss this high strung.
“How long’s it been?” Caleb snaps.
