Let’s just live.

Be patient.

“You’re very wise,” he murmured into Ezra’s ear.

In response, Ezra just snorted and hugged him tighter.

“Well?” Ezra asked.

His thumbnail wasn’t going to survive this. He could already taste blood, which was disgusting, since he wasn’t a vampire, but he couldn’t help himself.

“Well?” he repeated when Drew still hadn’t said anything.

It couldn’t mean anything good. He probably hadn’t gotten in, and Drew was just trying to figure out the right words to let him down gently.

He wasn’t disappointed. He wasn’t. University had always been a long shot. So he didn’t get in. Shit happened. He’d just work for a year and try again. He wasn’t giving up. A few months ago he would have, so this new attitude was a win on its own.

“It’s fine,” he said. “I wasn’t really expecting to get in, so it’s fine. I mean, MIT already told me no, so why wouldn’t BU? I’ll just go make breakfast.”

And mope.

“You got in.”

Ezra was halfway to the kitchen before the words registered. He slowly turned around.

“What?” he asked.

“You got in,” Drew repeated.

Ezra blinked. He went through the words in his head. You. Got. In. They didn’t seem to make much sense. The who and the what and the where?

He’d imagined he’d feel… something at the news. A sense of accomplishment. Victory. Joy. Anything. Instead, he was slightly pissed.

“Well, why the hell did you let me think I didn’t?” He marched back into the living room. “That’s a dick move.”

“Okay, first of all, if you throw your laptop in my hands and tell me to ‘check your email,’ it takes a guy a few seconds to get caught up and figure out what you want from him,” Drew said.

“Oh.” Now he felt stupid. “Sorry.”

Drew just smiled and shook his head as he got up.

Ezra stared at his laptop on the couch. He’d been terrified to open the email when it had landed in his inbox. He’d stared at his computer for at least a half an hour, each passing second only making him more nervous, so he’d gone in search of somebody who’d do the hard part for him.

“Really?” He exhaled the words as Drew stopped in front of him. “I really got in?”

“BU in the fall.” He found himself crushed into a bear hug as Drew let out a loud whoop next to his ear. “I’m so fucking proud of you,” he said.

“Shit,” Ezra said weakly. “Really?” That seemed to be the only thing he was able to say.

Drew just laughed. “Really. Why is that so hard to believe?”

“Fuck if I know,” Ezra said.

Bas walked into the room, fresh out of the shower, only a towel wrapped around his hips.

“What’s happening?” he asked, looking between Ezra and Drew. “I could’ve sworn I heard somebody whooping.”
