“Wanting me physically while we’re playing a game that will require me to mate with someone else is bullshit,” I said, fighting like hell to stop myself from wrapping my legs around his hips to pull him back to me.

“That’s not possible.”

My forehead creased.

“Wanting you and accepting that you’ll mate with someone else,” he clarified.

“You’re too afraid to even consider taking a mate, so?—”

“What if I wasn’t?”

I blinked.

What if he what?

“What if I decided to face my fear?”

My body flushed.

I was already wet between my thighs, but the wetness increased.

“I’d say it doesn’t matter, because I’m not interested in you.”

It was a bold-faced lie.

The fire that blazed to life in his eyes told me he knew it, too.

“So you don’t want me,” Rhett said, his voice suspiciously calm.

“No.” My heart was beating erratically.

“Then why did your pheromones kick in while you were on top of me?”

Crap.

Shit.

Damn.

“I was staring at someone else,” I lied.

“Staring isn’t enough to start them.”

“Fine, I was fantasizing about someone else.”

“Who?”

“I don’t owe you an explanation,” I snapped.

“You don’t,” he agreed. “But I’m not moving until I get one.”

He lowered his hips just a little, and I sucked in a breath at the pressure against me.

He felt incredible.

I wanted more—needed more.

But I couldn’t let myself have it.
