“It doesn’t matter,” I said and I went to step around him, “Where am I sleeping?”
Liam looked like he wanted to push me but he didn’t, and I was grateful. I didn’t want to talk about what happened after the day I kicked Liam out of my apartment. I didn’t want to explain the tattoo that covered the scar.
“It’s this way.” Liam gestured to a hall on the other side of the kitchen. We walked down the hallway and when we turned he pointed to the first door on the left, “This is your room for now… I’m at the end of the hall and that’s my office.”
He opened the door to my room. I followed him in and saw my luggage on the bed. He pointed to another door, “The closet and en suite are over there.”
The bed was huge with indigo bedding that matched the darkness on the walls. Floor to ceiling windows took up one wall and Liam showed me the remote that closed the blackout curtains.
“I have enough security in this building that no one will attack here. You’re safe. Get some sleep.” Liam closed the door behind him when he left, and I immediately unpacked and hung up the clothes in the closet.
I didn’t even know how long I was going to be here. I’d have to remember to ask Liam in the morning. I looked at the en suite quickly and grinned at the huge sinker tub sitting right in front of the window. I would take advantage of that before I went back to my own apartment. Hitting the button to close the blinds, I climbed into bed and snuggled under the comforter.
It wasn’t the same with Liam, and I hadn’t figured out if I wanted to try again. How many times did I have to have my heart broken by the same man before I learned to never give him a chance to break it again? Even if he never intentionally tried to do that, it still didn’t take away the pain he caused.
One thing was for sure, despite my desire to leave Liam in the past, I still fucking loved him and I knew now that nothing would change that. If I wasn’t careful, he’d win me again, and if he broke me again, I’d never recover.
I woke up in a completely dark room. Reaching for my phone I checked the time and it was a little after nine in the morning. I hit the button for the blinds and squinted as my eyes adjusted to the light. Forcing myself from the bed, I went to the bathroom first. After, I changed into jeans and a long sleeve v-neck but left my feet bare.
Leaving my room, I heard voices coming from the kitchen and when I turned the corner I saw three men sitting at the kitchen island across from where Liam stood over blueprints. Looking in the living room, I saw a woman sitting on the sofa reading a tablet. Her chestnut hair was pulled up into a messy bun and she wore clothing similar to mine.
The three men stopped and looked at me. The first one at the end was a big guy, muscular, with his hair in a purposefully messy side fringe. He smiled softly at me through his short beard and I noticed a slight rosy tint in his beige skin. The man in the middle had a hard look on his face that wasn’t cold. His steel blue eyes scanned me as he shoved his hand through his brown hair, pushing it off his face. The third man was leaner than the other two with red hair styled in a faux hawk and emerald green eyes that shined. He turned his head to look at the woman on the sofa who hadn’t noticed my entrance. As he did, the light hit his alabaster skin and I noticed freckles across his face.
Liam turned to me, “Morning.”
“Morning.” I nodded, then turned into the kitchen and headed towards the coffee machine. I poured myself a cup, adding creamer and turned back around.
Taking a sip of coffee, Liam said, “This is Tristan, Grayson, and Miles,” I coughed when the coffee went down the wrong pipe and Miles grinned.
“Well, she’s heard of us.” Grayson chuckled.
Tristan was the head of the Shaw family here in New York. They had ties back to London where the main operations for their family were based. They mostly dealt in construction here in New York, but I’d heard rumors of illegal shipments.
“I haven’t heard much.” I ran the back of my hand over my chin quickly, “Just how your company is the best to hire for renovations.”
Tristan smiled at me but I saw the hardness in his steel eyes. This was not a man you wanted to cross and a flash of concern ran through me at why Liam was dealing with them. With the blueprints on the counter, though, I was hoping this was for professional reasons and not something nefarious.
“This is Hannah,” Liam introduced me and the woman from the sofa walked over and stood next to Tristan, who immediately put his arm around her.
“It’s nice to meet you Hannah, this is Sera.” Tristan gestured to the woman.
“Hello.” I nodded and she smiled at me warmly.
“We are going to be a bit, still. Do you need something to eat?” Liam asked me and I shook my head again. Liam frowned at me, concerned I hadn’t eaten since the restaurant.
“Hannah,” Sera said, gesturing to the living room where we went to sit.
“You aren’t from New York are you?”
“Nope, I was born and raised in southern California. I moved here after college.”
“That’s how you know Liam.” She nodded.
“Yes. How do you know… um, them?” I gestured to the men standing at the kitchen island.
Sera smiled softly at me, “They got my husband to divorce me.”
“Oh… um,” I stumbled a bit and my eyebrows pinched in confusion.
