“I know.”
“Same time he dumped Mila.”
“I know.”
“I don’t understand how he could treat her the way he did.”
Wow! I’m more frustrated with my son hurting Mila than hurting me.
Rutherford shrugs. “Being a college athlete got to him.”
“Did I fuck this up? Did he need my guidance, and I let him break her heart because I wanted a chance with her?” Shit! Too much. This is exactly why I needed to keep my mouth shut.
Rutherford’s stifled laugh comes out as a huff. “It’s about time you finally admit this shit.”
“Keep that between us. It’s wrong on so many levels.”
He puts a hand on my shoulder. “You’re only human, while she’s a fucking goddess.”
Cheers erupt as the Hot Rollers claim victory. Several guys from our MC rush onto the track to congratulate their women. The reminder that so many of our brothers are finding relationships gut-punches me. And the fact that they’re with skaters from Mila’s team kicks me while I’m down.
Hell, Rutherford and I just gave Killian and Liam the idea to pay one of our nursing students, who’s on the team, to be their fake fiancée. It was a good deed. Belova needs the financial assistance but doesn’t have the grades to qualify for the scholarship program.
One of the former team members holds a baby while selling team merch on the sideline. A couple of clearly pregnant women help her.
I’m surrounded by reminders that I’m single and have no prospects since the one woman I crave is… Mila. Could somebody just roll me into my grave?
Rutherford swats my arm. “Everyone’s heading to the Aubergine Affair sex club to celebrate.”
“Go for it. I’m heading to the clubhouse, then home.”
Rutherford smirks. I step away, but he grabs my arm firmly. “What are you going to do, sing ‘Teardrops on my Stroking Hand’?”
“If that was a Taylor Swift reference, it didn’t work.” I yank my arm out of his grasp.
“You knew what it was, so obviously it did. Anyway, I heard Mila say she’s going.”
“Even worse.” I head for the exit, unable to shake the thought of Mila at a sex club. I can’t deal with that. I don’t have a right to deal with that.
“You can’t play the game if you don’t at least show up on the sideline, Sterling.” Rutherford’s voice indicates that he’s not following.
“I like having a job.” I wave over my shoulder.
“Everyone at the sex club signs an NDA.”
My fists ball as I come to a complete stop. Without turning, I say, “Leave her alone.”
“If you don’t show up, you’ll never know if I do.”
Chapter 2
Mila
The dim lighting and the black and dark purple décor help the Aubergine Affair maintain an air of sophistication and secrecy. I’m tickled that Belova finally agreed to come with me. I guess she saw safety in numbers since several teammates were coming for Drinks and Dicks.
She’s so cute in her buttoned-up librarian dress. Her air of innocence is no façade. That’s part of the reason I dared her to take up the next offer she gets from a guy. And as any good friend would do, she countered with a dare for me to hit on two of our professors, one of which is my ex’s dad, Professor Sterling.
If only I could be as lucky as another girl in town, Madison, who ended up hooking up with her ex’s dad and his friend. Neither of them were her nursing school professors though. I accept the line where fantasy ends and reality begins.
