He swings the door open, and Mila’s shoulders relax slightly. “Oh, it’s bigger than I expected.” Her gaze travels over the neat rows of shelving stocked with various office supplies.
An uneasy feeling washes over me. Is it a foolish move to take her into the stock room when people are around? What do I care? I’m ready to marry her. “We should hurry.”
She enters first, then Rutherford, and I close the door behind us. My heart and mind race for a way to make the moment romantic but my hesitation gives her time to pull her thoughts together.
“I have something to tell you both.” She takes a deep breath, her hands fidgeting with the hem of her shirt.
Rutherford moves closer, his face etched with concern. “We’re here for you. In fact, that’s why we want—”
Mila’s eyes well up with tears. “I’m pregnant.”
My heart soars, a childlike rush of joy flooding through me. I want to shout from the rooftops, but Mila’s expression stops me cold.
Rutherford’s jaw hangs open.
“I love you.” The words tumble from my lips before I can stop them. “I’ll take care of you and the baby.”
Mila purses her lips and shakes her head. “You don’t have to say that. I know this isn’t what any of us planned.”
“That’s not true,” I say, desperate to make her see. “I’ve wanted to claim you as my own from long before I had you in the hot tub. I want this, Mila. I thought you did too.”
Rutherford finds his voice. “We both do, Mila. Now quit running from us, Little One and let us love you.”
A flicker of hope sparks in Mila’s eyes, but hesitation lingers. I can’t bear the distance between us any longer. Slowly, carefully, I open my arms to her. For a heart-stopping moment, I think she might pull away. But then she’s there, melting into my embrace.
I lift her off her feet, overcome with emotion as her legs wrap around my waist. Rutherford steps in, enveloping her from behind, sandwiching her between us. The warmth of her body, the familiar scent of her hair—she’s finally ours.
“Mila,” I murmur against her hair. “There’s something else.”
The door flies open with a bang. My stomach drops.
Department Head Chen’s eyes are wide, his expression stalled in shock. Josh smirks at us from over Chen’s shoulder.
Chapter 14
Rutherford
I stride down the hallway to the Dean’s office, my heart jackhammering. The familiar corridors of the university feel hostile. We’ve been summoned to address our infraction.
Sterling escorted Mila to the Dean’s office as requested. I stayed back to call Hendrix and explain our urgent situation. He can’t make it on such short notice, but is sending information right away.
Each step takes me closer to our consequence. I’m not sure how much more I can delay, or if Mila and Sterling have already been ushered inside.
My phone buzzes in my hand, and I glance down to see Hendrix’s message.
“Got it,” I mutter, scrolling through the screenshots. He’s made annotations on the university’s policy, heavy with legal jargon. The wording of the policy leaves room for people who are married. We have a fighting chance.
I round the corner and spot Sterling and Mila sitting together outside the Dean’s office. I stifle a pang of jealousy. There’s no time for that now.
“I’m with them,” I say, bypassing the secretary. To my lovers, I say, “Hendrix came through.”
Sterling’s eyes light up, but Mila’s face remains pale. I want to reach out and touch her, to tell her everything will be okay, but I can’t. Not here. Not now. Her arms crossed over her chest tell me she’s not ready to throw our situation in the dean’s face.
She glances at the secretary so I keep my voice down and take a knee in front of the two of them.
“There’s a loophole for people who are married. It’ll work for at least two of us.”
Mila’s expression brightens.
