“Thanks.”
Joey raises the privacy glass, and it leaves Mitchell and me in silence. The latter keeps quiet until we get to the subway a couple blocks away. He declined my offer to take him home. He said he had some errands to run before he saw his wife. Flowers and a box of chocolates.
I pull up the group chat.
Me
I need you at my place ASAP. I’ll be there in 45. It just keeps getting worse. I’m taking Tiera there as soon as I get to her.
My brother’s response is immediate.
Cormac
Dad called. I was already on the way.
Me
WTF happened???
Cormac
Nothing for sure but Eli told Dad someone tried to get into her building’s back gate but didn’t have a fob. A woman recognized the guy but it felt off to Eli. We were going to take her to your place.
Dillan
Mair’s already at Uncle Ronan and Aunt Breda’s place and Finn’s taking Nikki and Ally over there now. Sean and Shane are with me. Do you want us to pick up food on the way? We were going to grab something anyhow.
Me
Sure but make it fast.
Sean
I’ll call Paul’s and have pizzas ready by the time we get there.
Finn owns a few restaurants, and Paul’s Place is one of them. If they’re in Brooklyn, they must have been collecting on some overdue loan payments. Assuming no real traffic, a stop to get the pizza and a drive to East Harlem should have them there around the same time as I get Tiera there.
Me
No fecking anchovies Shane. I don’t need my place stinking like a fecking wharf.
Shane
Fine but only for Tiernan’s sake.
I sit back and try not to feel restless or panicked. But I do.
Chapter Twenty-One
Tiera
“Tiernan?”
I step out of my office when Kieran calls out to me. He gestures me over and holds out his phone.
“Do you know this man?”
There’s a side view of a guy at the back gate to my building. It’s pretty clear, so I can tell what he looks like. I shake my head.
