Page 72 of Falling With a Spin

I run my hands through my hair as I stare out the window, panic continuing to rise. “It’s just a misunderstanding. Caleb is my best friend.” I look up at Garrett and then at the rest of the boys, understanding and pity, stare back at me.

“I'm going to go call Hunter to make sure he’s alright.” Justin walks out of the diner with Cole and Matt behind them, leaving Garrett and me alone.

I close my eyes, taking a shaky breath in. Everything in me wants to go to Hunter and tell him all that has happened in the past week. I want him to hold and kiss me. To see that smile that makes my heart skip a beat, not the hard, cold one that he had on earlier.

“Hey Em, is everything okay?” I hear Caleb's voice from behind me.

I open my eyes and see Garrett go rigid, eyes going cold, when he notices Caleb standing behind me. The look washes from his face when he catches me looking, and I raise my eyebrows at him before turning around.

“Yeah, everything is fine. Just saying hi to a friend.” I give him the best smile I can muster up at the moment.

“Okay, well, I need to go. I'm meeting up with some guys from the team.”

I nod my head, and he brings me in for a hug. I could feel Garrett's gaze on us. Unease flows into me the longer Caleb holds onto the hug, and I pry his arms from me.

“I’m Caleb, by the way.” He holds out his hand to Garrett and he looks down at it and back up at him, ignoring it.

“If you need anything, Emma, I'm here for you.” Garrett looks Caleb over one more time before walking out the door.

I watch him stand outside with the guys, and he looks back at me before getting in the car. Turning around towards Caleb, I see his gaze is still on where Garrett once stood.

What is going on with these two?

“Caleb,” I say.

His gaze doesn't budge.

“Caleb.” I try again and wave my hand in front of him. He blinks and looks at me.

“What?” He snaps at me, and I flinch, taken back by the tone of his voice.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to snap at you.” He brings his forefingers to the bridge of his nose and squeezes it.

“Don’t you need to go meet up with the team?” I quietly say.

“Yeah, I do. I will catch up with you later.” He throws me a small smile and walks out the door. Leaving me standing there.

What the fuck just happened?

Hunter

I slam my hand against the steering wheel as I drive down the road, unsure of where I’m going. What the actual fuck was that?

I haven’t seen or heard from her in a week, and when I do, she is with some guy at our place. The place where it holds memories between us. I’m a fucking idiot for even texting her today. She probably saw it and laughed when she was with him.

I pull off to the side of the road, in the middle of nowhere, and let the raging scream leave my body.

Why does this happen to me? Continuously losing the ones I love around me. Disappointing family and not being the person people need me to be.

Did I really push Emma to the point she won't come back?

A crack forms in me at the thought of never hearing her laugh or seeing the real smile that comes out when I’m around. Never hearing the sound of her voice again and only remembering how cold it was on that day.

I lean my head against the steering wheel, and my phone starts ringing. Looking at it, I see Justin’s name flash across the screen, and I stare at it till it dimms. But each time it ends, it’s a different name as the guys take turns calling me.

Garrett's name flashes across the screen for the fourth time. I lean back against the seat and prepare myself as I pick it up and accept the call before it goes to voicemail.

“Hey,” My voice is dead and filled with void.
