Bre doesn’t hide her annoyance. Chris just laughs before taking a sip of his coffee.
“How would you feel if I told you Paige and I may have hooked up a little after the last family dinner? We might both be feeling the same way toward each other.”
I try to look as pathetic as possible, but I’m unsure what to do. Bre reads my body language like a shark circling her prey before letting out a small sigh and a smile. She snatches the coffee from Chris’s hand and hands it to me before sitting beside me.
“And what are those feelings exactly?”
We both need to sip our coffees as Chris comes over with a third cup for himself.
“What do you mean by hooked up?” Chris asks, and Bre rolls her eyes at him, annoyed, before directing her attention back to me. I let an uncomfortable smile cross my face before letting out a breath.
“We ran into each other at the gym after Friday night dinner when she left, and Seth was all weird. Well, one thing led to another, and she spent the night. No sex, but there was serious stuff.”
I have to pause to keep myself focused.
“Nice,” Chris says with a nod, and Bre just shakes her head before gesturing for me to continue.
“Yesterday Katherine was at the house, and I just knew something wasn’t right.”
I clear my throat.
“Kat told me that the baby we lost almost three years ago wasn’t mine. She had gotten pregnant by Seth.”
The words linger in the space as Chris looks at me with wide eyes, and Bre doesn’t so much as flinch.
“So, this whole time, neither of you felt it was important to mention your weird love triangle to my sister?”
Bre is pissed, and rightfully so.
“I told her last night when I found out. She picked me up after she got off work and let me crash here,” I answer, unsure what else to say.
Chris’s phone rings and he ignores it at first. When it rings again, he looks down and almost pales when he answers.
He listens briefly before snapping, “Isn’t Paige supposed to be with you?”
Something in his tone is a different kind of furious. Sometimes, I feel like he loves Paige just as much as I do. Bre and I look at each other, concerned when Chris is silent again for a long moment. Nodding and sighing in what seems like disbelief.
“So let me get this straight. My girlfriend’s sister found you waist-deep in Katherine.”
His eyes fix on mine, but Bre starts fuming with rage.
“My dad’s house in an hour. No arguments, Seth.”
Chris’s tone is way too calm, and I am so glad I’m not on the receiving end of it. I can’t help but worry about Paige and wonder where she is.
Bre already has her phone out and is no doubt trying to reach her sister. All at once, the weight of Chris’s words rattles in my mind.
“I need a shower and some clothes, if you don’t mind, before we head to Dad’s,” I ask Chris, and he nods slightly before taking a seat back down on the couch.
Chapter 43
Paige
Idrive around for hours to eventually find myself at Graham’s townhouse, but I can’t get out of my car.
I turn my phone back on and roll my eyes at the fifteen missed calls and numerous texts from everyone. I go to my contact list and call the only person I think can offer guidance.
“Hey, wifey!” David says in the sweetest voice.
