Sam’s tone said he was impressed as hell. “CIA are going to love you, and they’re going to owe us a huge favor. Great job, guys. It looks like you accomplished zero footprint. Mira?”
“There’s chatter that Gomez was taken, but nothing about it being Americans.”
“Raven does it again,” Dex said just as the chopper came into view.
Chapter 10
Mira answered the video call. Sam had stepped out to talk to his CIA contact about the handover once Raven brought Gomez in.
“Everything OK? You don’t look so good,” Kelly asked gently.
“I’m fine, thanks.” She reached for her coffee, avoiding eye contact.
“Fine. Dex said his mother told him fine meant feelings inside not expressed. I think she was right.”
Mira looked up at her with a weak smile.
Kelly smiled back. “If you want to talk, I’m a good listener. The team are safe. We have some time.”
“Thanks, but really, I’m OK.”
Mira took a sip of coffee trying to reassure her friend and not think about how scared she had been when they couldn’t reach Tyler. She cared about both teams, loved them all. But Tyler, God damn him, the thought that he was in trouble or worse? She hadn’t been prepared for her reaction to that.
Glancing at her cellphone, she saw his last text. She hadn't responded, determined to keep some distance. It’s not like he’d changed his mind about a relationship. She didn’t like it, but she respected he’d been honest. At least, that’s what she’d told herself when deciding not to text back. Why was it so hard? Why the hell did she have to fall for someone who was unattainable? She sighed, placing her head in her hands, momentarily forgetting Kelly was on screen.
“Hey, what’s going on?”
Mira looked up at her and her face must have told its own story because Kelly immediately looked alarmed.
“Mira, hey. He’s OK. They already got picked up and are in the helo. They’ll be back tomorrow.”
“God, Kelly, I just, I don’t know. It scared the hell out of me. Not sure why this time is any different.”
“You know why,” Kelly said softly.
“That obvious, huh?”
