Mark chuckled indulgently, “Slow down, tiger.” Another low tone from the driver’s seat, and one of James’s hands came down on her thigh, sliding just inside her skirt. She struggled not to show her reaction.

“His name is Chris Keller. He didn’t say anything of note. I’d say he’s a person of interest but I’m having a hard time seeing him as the killer.”

“Why?”

“He denied ever being in Stoverton and said, given time to get his calendar together, he would most likely be able to prove where he was.”

James’s pinky began stroking the sensitive skin of her inner thigh. Cami swallowed, struggling to focus. Her hand came down to trap his.

Mark continued, oblivious. “When I first got to his office, he didn’t seem at all fazed. More annoyed that I was taking up his time. It wasn’t until I started asking about his family that it got interesting.

“When I asked him if he was his father’s only son, he went white. He said yes, but I think he’s lying. That’s not all, beautiful.”

James’s fingers tightened on her before pulling away from her hand and slipping higher, until his pinky grazed the lace edge of her thong. Her pulse picked up.

Focus, Cami. This is important.

She grasped his hand in an attempt to still his caresses. She glanced at his profile but his expression was carefully blank. Cami could almost believe she was imagining the moment.

“There is a weird connection between this guy and one of our previous persons of interest though.”

“Really?” Cami asked, trying to make her voice sound normal, even as heat flooded through her as another finger joined his pinky, brushing lightly over the lace front. “Who?”

“Matt Crawford. This Chris guy is dating Crawford’s mother. When I pressed him on how close he was to Matt, he shut the whole thing down.” Mark’s face grew worried. “Cami, I know you are passionate about this, and I know your podcast’s reputation, but these are powerful people. You need to be careful.”

James slid his hand away, and Cami banished the feeling of disappointment wishing she could banish the ache between her legs as easily.

“I know. I will.”

Mark gave her an easy smile. “Great. Let me know when you’re back in town. I still owe you that dinner. Might not be on par with where you’re going tonight, but I know some good barbeque places.”

James’s arm suddenly reached across the phone, his suit-jacketed arm obscuring her for a minute. He adjusted the air vent on the far side before pulling his arm back.

“I didn’t realize you were with someone.” Mark’s tone was stiffer than it had been before.

“It’s okay. James knows about my investigation.”

“Well…” Mark said unhappily. “I hope you have a good night.”

“Thanks, I’ll call you when I’m in town.” Cami pressed the button to end the video call before turning in her seat to look at James. “Really?”

“He was being inappropriate.”

“Are you high?”

James had just stuck his hand under her skirt while she was on the phone, and he was accusing the detective of being inappropriate?

“We are working together. Mark respects what I do.”

James snorted. “How many of the detectives on your other podcast cases did you call by their first name? How many asked you to dinner and leered at you through the phone?”

“He wasn’t leering! Are you saying men and women can’t be friends?”

The scorching look James gave her caused her to snap her mouth shut.

“Friends, huh? The same day he contacts a suspect he calls you at…” He made a show of looking at his watch. “Eight-thirty at night? You realize, at the angle you were holding the phone, he was looking down your dress.”

Oh my god! He’s jealous!
