I hum in appreciation of the warmth of his breath against my skin and the feel of his solid body against mine. “Are you going to bite him?”

“No. But I just might bite you.”

I yelp as his teeth nip the tip of my earlobe. He licks the spot he just bit and then sucks it between his lips. Warmth pools between my thighs. My knees begin to feel weak.

“Tell me why you came here to celebrate,” he says. “Why you’re kissing and dry humping that man, and what job you’re taking.”

That breaks through my haze somewhat. I step back and force myself to focus. “How’d you know about the job and that I was here?”

“Answer my questions first.”

I don’t like his tone. How dare he show up demanding answers and biting me. “No, I don’t think I will.”

“You’re coming home.”

“Don’t boss me around.”

“I’m your boss, so I will.” His fingers wrap around my arm.

Corey must’ve been watching us, because it’s at that moment he appears and grabs Jakob’s wrist. Corey’s carefree smile is replaced by a snarl. “How about you release my friend.”

Jakob releases me and places his hands in his pockets. “Let’s go over to a table.”

Jakob guides us to the restaurant section of The K.O. Club. We slide into a booth with Corey across from me and Jakob pressed against my side.

“Nicole,” Jakob says, “are you going to introduce me to your friend?”

“Corey, this is Jakob Petridis. He’s Noah’s best friend. Jakob, this is Corey Stables. We met in college and he’s one of my best friends.”

Jakob scoffs. “I’d say I’m more to you than just your brother’s best friend.”

“This is Jakob? I’d agree, buddy. You’re the center of her universe.”

And just like that, Corey is no longer my best friend. The table shakes as I kick his shin from

Corey grins. “Well, now that I know you’re not a creep trying to take off with her, I’m going to get going. You good, Nic?”

“No,” I growl, to which he snickers and gives me a thumbs-up. Unfortunately, on a night much like tonight, I confessed my undying love for Jakob to Corey, and he’s had a play-by-play of how things have been going since I started working for him. I’m sure in his own delusionally sweet way, he thinks he’s doing me a favor.

As Corey scampers off, Jakob whispers, “I like him. He better not ever kiss you again, though. What was that? Do you kiss all your friends like that?”

“Yes,” I deadpan.

“Why don’t you kiss me then? Am I not your friend?”

“No, you’re my boss, remember?”

“Cute.” He gently pinches my chin. “Let’s go. It’s time to get you home so you can rest and hopefully not have a hangover tomorrow. You’re going to tell me what’s going on first thing in the morning.”

I can’t wait until then. Might as well get it over with while I have my liquid courage. “I’ve been given the opportunity to start working now.”

“What’d you tell them?”

“That I’d give them an answer tomorrow.”

“And?”

“You didn’t keep your promise. I could wait and start on my original date, but why do that when you’re going to keep being weird? One minute you’re avoiding me, and the next you’re appearing out of nowhere and peeing on me like a dog.”
