Once inside my apartment, I grabbed a beer from the fridge and sank onto the couch, staring at the ceiling. My mind wandered back to my mother, to the days when life was simpler and happier. I remembered her laugh, her gentle touch, and the way she made everything better just by being there.

I took a long swig of my beer, trying to numb the pain, and then my thoughts drifted to Lily, and I had a wild idea. I was going to ask Lily to come with me to the Sinclair Family Villa this weekend.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN - IGNITING HOPE

The bell over the bookstore door chimed softly as a customer left, and I let out a small sigh of contentment. It had been a busy day, and the bookstore was humming with that cozy, late-afternoon tranquility I adored. The faint scent of aged paper and the soft hum of indie music playing in the background made it my little haven.

I was just finishing up with some inventory when my phone buzzed in my pocket. A smile tugged at my lips as I saw Alex's name flash on the screen. Sliding my thumb across the screen, I answered, trying to keep the excitement out of my voice. “Hey, you.”

“Hey, beautiful. Are you free tonight?” His voice was warm and inviting, making my heart flutter.

“I think I can clear my schedule. What did you have in mind?” I replied, biting my lip to keep from grinning like a schoolgirl.

“How about dinner? I know this great little place downtown.”

Dinner with Alex? Yes, please. “I’d love that,” I said, my voice softening. “What time?”

“I’ll pick you up at seven. Wear something that makes you feel amazing.”

“I can do that.” I purred, my excitement bubbling over. “See you at seven.”

“Can’t wait, Lil,” he said, and I could hear the smile in his voice.

As I hung up, I felt a giddy excitement bubbling inside me—dinner with Alex. Just the thought made me feel like I was walking on air. I glanced around the store, knowing I had a couple of hours to close up and get ready. The rest of the afternoon seemed to fly by, and before I knew it, it was time to lock up.

I headed home, my mind spinning with thoughts of Alex. His smile, his touch, the way he made me feel like I was the only woman in the world. Once inside my apartment, I took a quick shower, letting the hot water soothe my nerves. Tonight had to be perfect.

After drying off, I stood before my closet, deliberating over what to wear. I finally settled on

a deep emerald-green dress that hugged my curves in all the right places and flowed elegantly down to my knees. It was elegant yet sexy, with a low neckline and a slit that ran just high enough to be enticing without being too revealing. I paired it with a set of delicate silver jewelry and strappy heels that added just the right amount of height.

I twirled in front of the mirror, feeling a rush of confidence, and I couldn’t help but wonder what Alex would think.

I took my time with my makeup, going for a smoky eye and a swipe of red lipstick. I styled my hair in loose waves along with a spritz of my favorite perfume, and I was ready. Glancing at the clock, I saw it was nearly seven. Perfect timing.

I was just finishing up when I heard a knock at the door. I took a deep breath, smoothing down my dress before opening it. Alex stood there, looking devastatingly handsome in a crisp navy suit emphasizing his broad shoulders and lean frame. His eyes widened as he took me in, and a slow, appreciative smile spread across his face.

“Wow, Lily,” he murmured, stepping closer. “You look stunning.”

“Thank you,” I said, a blush creeping up my cheeks. “You clean up pretty well yourself.”

He chuckled, offering me his arm. “Shall we?”

As we stepped out into the evening, the city was alive with the vibrant energy of a summer night. The walk downtown was filled with easy conversation and laughter, the city lights twinkling like stars around us.

We arrived at a charming little restaurant tucked away in a quiet corner of the city. It was one of those places that felt like a well-kept secret. The ambiance was cozy and intimate, with soft lighting and candlelit tables. Alex led me to a secluded table in the back, and as we sat down, I couldn’t help but marvel at how perfect everything seemed.

“This place is beautiful,” I said, glancing around.

“Not as beautiful as you,” Alex replied, his eyes locking onto mine.

The evening unfolded like a dream. We talked about everything and nothing, sharing stories and laughing until our sides hurt. The food was exquisite, each dish a delightful surprise, but it was Alex’s company that made the night truly magical.

“Lily,” Alex said softly, reaching across the table to take my hand. “I’m so glad we’re doing this.”

“Me too,” I replied, squeezing his hand. “Tonight has been perfect.”
