Chapter Five
It’s beentwo weeks since I’ve started back at work, the morning sickness has finally passed and I’m feeling like a human again. Things with Everett have been wonderful and living with him isn’t as bad as I had anticipated. Falling asleep in his arms is heaven.
The elevator doors open and I hear the clicking of heels against the marble floor, followed by the overpowering scent of Dior Pure Poison. Zara’s here.
She saunters past me and toward Everett’s office, she doesn’t knock just lets herself in. “Oh darling, you are here,” she says in her annoying voice, the one she uses on those clients who have more money, more power than her.
“Zara.” His voice is tight. “You’re late. Saylor’s been here since eight this morning. You are due to start work at nine and yet here you are strolling in at almost eleven.”
I cringe at the harshness of his tone. “Everett, what on earth has gotten into you. You’re never usually like this.” Is she for real? “Did you have a bad morning, baby?” Her voice is sultry.
“I’m not your baby, now get to work,” Everett demands.
Zara walks out of his office and glares at me, as though I’m the reason she’s being rebuffed. The elevator dings announcing that it’s at our floor, I glance at the schedule, it must be Joshua, he’s Everett’s best friend.
“Oh and Zara…” Everett begins stepping out of his office. “You are on your last warning. One more misstep and you’re gone. From now on, do the job you’re paid to do.”
“Now, Everett, I didn’t teach you to talk to women that way,” his mom says as she strides out of the elevator. “Zara dear, are you okay?”
“Yes, Mrs Barrett, I’m fine. Thank you for asking. Everett’s just having a bad day.”
“Mom, what are you doing here?” Everett asked, still sounding pissed off.
“I came to see if you were free for lunch but judging by what I’ve witnessed, I think you have other things to do. Zara dear, are you free for lunch?”
Zara’s eyes light up, she throws me a satisfied smile. “I’d love to. I won’t be able to have a long break. I was late for work and I have to catch up on what I’ve missed.”
Mrs Barrett waves her hand dismissively. “That’s why there’s two of you. Ms Bright will do your work.”
I glare at Everett and he doesn’t say anything. “Actually,” I say, my voice loud enough for them all to hear. “I’ve been here since eight this morning doing all the work that she failed to do last week. I’m not paid enough to do the work of two people,” I say with a smile as I get to my feet and pick up a stack of papers that are for Everett and walk into his office.
“Are you going to let her talk to me like that?” His mom asks him and I roll my eyes at her dramatics. I wasn’t rude to her, it was more directed at Everett than anyone else.
“She’s right. Saylor does twice the work that Zara does and yet she doesn’t get the praise she deserves. Zara spends most of her days online shopping,” Everett tells her and hope sparks inside.
I was concerned when it comes to his mom, they have a weird relationship. I understand about being close to your parents and doing anything you can to make them happy. I was the same with my mom, but Everett seems to do as his mom says. Like with Zara for instance and I know that the woman hates me, she looks at me as though I’m beneath her. A part of me thinks that his mom will tell him I’m not good enough for him and then he’ll listen to her and end things.
“That may be so, Everett, but have you actually taken the time to teach Zara the things that need to be done? Hmm, then you can get rid of that God-awful woman.”
“Awful woman?” Everett questions, I can hear the anger in his voice.
“Yes, awful,” his mom reiterates. “She’s rude and disrespectful. She’s everything you shouldn’t have representing this company. The woman is a nobody and she’s using your name and money to try and make a name for herself. When are you going to open your eyes and see this?”
Tears sting my eyes at her words, how can someone think that about me? I’m nothing like that, I love Everett with or without money. It just tells me that when she finds out that I’m pregnant she’s going to think I’m trapping him.
“Enough!” I jump at Everett’s yell. “Shit. Mom, I’m sorry.”
“You’ve said enough,” she replies, I’m pretty sure that I hear tears in her voice. “Zara, lunch at Mominco’s?”
“Sounds fabulous, Mrs Barrett. I’ll see you there.” Zara sounds pleased with herself.
“Oh and, Everett, this Friday you’ll be attending the Kiss me Ball with Zara. I have already purchased your tickets.” The sound of the elevator doors closing has my feet moving, I place the stack of papers on his desk and turn to leave. I come face to face with Everett.
He shuts his office door, “Say.” His voice is soft and uncertain.
I shake my head, “Not here.” I’m close to tears, I can’t talk about this now.
“Baby,” he says softly walking toward me. As soon as he’s in touching distance he pulls me toward him, his lips crashing against mine. I get lost in his kiss, my mind foggy with lust, I’d love nothing better than to strip him down and have sex with him right here.
