Chapter Three

NOAH

It wasan awkward ride from the hotel to the airport. It ended up being Kennedy and me, and Tori.

The woman could talk. And while she wasn’t the cold-hearted she-viper Gina was, she still was all-business.

We were to play up being in love. We were to sing Promises To You just like we did in the video I posted so that the entire world could witness our chemistry live. We were to keep things on the down-low if we decided to hook up with anyone outside this marriage. And Tori asked Kennedy to sign dozens of papers.

I wanted to throttle the woman when it got to that part. But as I’d started to argue, Kennedy laid a hand on my arm and quietly said “It’s fine, Noah.”

I couldn’t explain why my heart simultaneously skipped a beat and felt a wash of peace at the same time when she touched me.

We arrive at the airport and we’re taken to the private jet in the back corner of the airport. And my heart starts racing.

We all have to face the consequences of our actions. Mine is about to come in the form of the people I care about most in this world.

“I’m really sorry for how intense this is about to get,” I say as I turn back and look at Kennedy at the base of the stairs. “The guys, their significant others, they’re good people. Whatever happens, it’s just because they care.”

“They’re just people,” she says calmly. “I’m not scared. And I know they’re good. They’re close to you.”

I blink twice at her, once again at a loss for words.

She keeps saying that. That I’m good. I don’t know what I told her last night. If it was the truth, I don’t know how she could say that. Yet she has. Multiple times.

I climb the stairs, and just before I step into the aircraft, I reach back for Kennedy’s hand.

I’m not going to let her go into this alone.

And from the sweet, hesitant smile on her face, maybe she isn’t going to let me go in alone either.

We step inside, and like the guilty dog I am, my eyes sweep for danger.

Gabriel is sitting at the back of the plane with Sophia in his lap. They’re both smiling, talking easily about something. Owen sits alone in the middle of the plane, headphones on, staring out the window. That was a surprise, yet not, when just a few nights ago his bass tech darted out on stage, tackled a groupie who went a little psycho, and then Owen went and announced his love for her in front of seventy-thousand people. But she’s still a part of the crew, and she’s already overseas getting ready for the next leg of the tour.

My brother lifts a bag into the overhead bin for Mia, whose eyes grow wide and excited when she sees me and Kennedy walk in.

“Everyone,” I say, speaking before any of them can berate me in front of my new wife. “This is Kennedy.”

“It is so nice to meet you, Kennedy,” Mia says as she shoves my brother out of the way and bounds forward. “It’s always a pleasure to have another redhead around.”

Mia doesn’t hesitate in wrapping Kennedy in a massive hug, and none of us are the least bit surprised. Mia Lockhart is sunshine in a bottle.

“Oh,” Kennedy says in a slight oof as she’s attacked by my brother’s better half. “It’s…it’s really nice to meet you too.”

“I’m Mia,” the woman says, backing up just a step. “And trust me, it’s a very good thing to have some more women on this tour. So I am so excited that you agreed to come with us.”

She says it so genuine and excited, almost like this wasn’t a massive screw up and Kennedy really did want to come with us.

“Amen to that,” Sophia says as she climbs out of Gabriel’s lap and walks down the aisle. She hugs Kennedy as well, though, over her shoulder, she gives me this are you serious look. “And now we all know the Alexander men have a type, don’t we?”

“Well, everyone knows you won’t have any more fun than with a redhead.”

My mouth drops when the words pop out of Kennedy’s mouth, just like that.

“A-fucking-men to that,” Tyler calls out, loudly, as he grabs Mia by her hips and yanks her back to him, grinding his own hips into her backside.

“Tyler!” Mia cries out in horror and elation.
