As far as I was aware there were only three people who’d stepped inside this apartment in the last three days – Cattus, Vic and Ollie. It had to be Ollie and I wait with baited breath for him to hurl the ammunition at me. I could see it now, he’ll offer a trade. If I leave Cattus alone, he’ll give me back my goods.

“Good bye, Jonathon,” Vic in her proud cold voice as she walked to the door.

“Bye, Vic. Give Bruno a blowjob for me,” I mumbled under my breath.

I glanced up at her just as she closed the door behind her and caught a little smirk on her face. I didn’t like what I saw, but at least she didn’t have to hide him anymore.

My cell rang. My brother’s name flashed up on the screen. “What was in the safe?”he asked.

“As if you don’t know.”

“There’s nothing in there that connects me to your illegal racket is there?”

I fell silent for a few beats. “You’re full of shit, Art. As of two nights ago when you decided to confront Cattus downstairs and then show your face to me, I hired some thugs to work you over.”

“Fuck you.”

“What did you do with the contents of the safe, Arthur?”

“I knew nothing about your damn safe until you rang me just now accusing me of theft.”

“You’ve become a great liar, Art. I guess I can take the credit for that.”

“I’m not lying, so call off your thug crew.”

I was losing my cool. “I’m going to ask you one more time. What the fuck did you do with the contents of the safe?”

He hesitated. “Call your thugs off and I’ll tell you. Until then I’m playing dumb.”

There was something in the tone of his voice that bothered me, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Without a doubt he was lying, I just wasn’t sure what he was lying about.

“You hear me?” he shot down the line.

“Fine. I’ll call them off. Now bring my contents back to me ASAP.”

“You gotta prove it to me, bruh. I’d be an idiot to take your word for it. Two days. If the thugs haven’t confronted me in two days, then I’ll bring the contents back.”

“Do you have any idea who you’re messing with?”

“Of course I fucking do, the man who calls himself Dominus,” he sniggered.

A chill snaked down my spine. “You’re not thinking about doing something stupid.”

“And what would constitute being stupid in your world, Jon?”

“Going to our father with the contents.”

He laughed. “I find it interesting that you’re more worried about our parents realizing that their son is a fucking sadistic serial killer who runs an illegal racket pawning out students to rich Platinum members, than the police finding out about it. But then the KVPD are under the thumb of the Snake and Chalice Society, which means they’re under your thumb. So, I guess you’ve got nothing to worry about there.”

The hair stood up on the back of my neck. Something wasn’t right. I cleared my throat. “Art, you wanna tell me what the contents in the safe are?”

He went dead on the line for a few beats, then he started clearing his throat, delaying his answer.

“I thought so.”

I hung up.

If it wasn’t Art then it had to be either Cattus or Vic, unless someone broke in. I checked the app on my phone connected to my security camera.
