Her hands moved of their own accord, finding their way around his waist, gripping the back of his T-shirt. Her stomach flipped at the little growling sound he made when she brought herself as close to him as she could get.

She felt a fluttering in her belly, nothing like she had ever experienced with any guy she’d been with, and she realized it was the baby’s movement. It came and went, and then it hit her hard. She pulled away from Duncan and dropped her hands to her belly.

He gripped her upper arms. “What is it?”

“The baby kicked. Hard.”

Duncan’s face lit up. “Are you serious?”

It kicked again. “Oh my gosh. That was really hard.”

“What does it feel like?”

She took his hand and placed it on her belly, his throat moving as he swallowed. After the kiss they’d just shared, this touch felt intimate. He stared down at his hand, waiting, and then the baby kicked.

“Whoa!” Duncan’s eyes shot to hers. “I felt that.”

“You did?”

He laughed, and they both stood still, waiting for it to happen again.

“Come on, Coconut,” Jamie urged. “Kick Daddy again.”

When nothing happened, Duncan reached up with his free hand and touched her cheek.

“Duncan, what are you doing?” she whispered.

“I don’t want you dating Max.”

“You can’t tell me what to do.”

“It’s not right. You’re my family. Mine.”

Her lips parted. She didn’t know what to say to that, because it was what she wanted more than anything.

He rested his hands on her waist and leaned closer until their foreheads touched. “Jamie.”

“Duncan, you can’t do this to me. It’s not fair.”

“Break up with him.”

“Why should I?”

“Because I don’t want to share you and the baby with anyone.”

She pulled back, her eyes narrowing. “But I have to share you with Dréa?”

He took her face in his hands once again. “Dréa and I broke up.”

Her stomach somersaulted at his news, and goosebumps covered every inch of her body at the look he was giving her.

“I want you, Jamie. You and me and the baby. I want us to be a family.”

This couldn’t be happening. Could it? She felt suddenly lightheaded, and the room began to spin. She gripped his forearms just before everything went dark.

Chapter 40

Jamie’s eyes opened to a dark room. She glanced around to get her bearings. There was an IV in her arm, the sound of beeping monitors, a dry erase board across the room with her name on it. In the chair to her left, Duncan was hunched over with a small blanket draped over half his body.
