Shannon cracked up.
“Seriously. Should I have told him? I feel dishonest going out with him and not telling him first.”
“Max is a good guy. When you explain the circumstances, he’ll be honest with you about how he feels about it.”
“So, you think I should still go?”
“Absolutely.”
“Are you sure? Because I feel like calling him back right now and telling him my situation.”
“It’s up to you, Jame, but honestly, it’s just dinner, right? If things go well, then tell him. If you don’t feel anything for him, then don’t.”
“What about Duncan?”
Her eyebrow raised again. “What about Duncan?”
“You saw how he was acting at the movies.”
“It’s not his life, it’s yours. He should want you to be happy too.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
Shannon rolled forward and took Jamie’s hands in hers. “Everything’s going to work out how it’s supposed to. No matter what happens, God has a plan. He’s got a reason for this happening and this baby coming into all of our lives. Just trust Him and pray for His guidance. He’ll get you through it all. Even going out on a date with my cutie pie cousin.”
Jamie smirked. “He is pretty cute.”
“He’s a real catch.”
“Why hasn’t been caught before now?”
“He had a steady girlfriend a year or so ago, but they broke up. Not sure why. I don’t think he’s found the right girl yet.” She squeezed Jamie’s hands before letting go. “Maybe it’s you.”
Jamie laughed. “Okay, let’s see how the first date goes before you go marrying me off to your cousin.”
They laughed and rolled back to their desks.
Jamie thought about what Shannon had said. She did believe God had a reason for all of this. But waiting to see what that plan was … well, patience was not her strong suit.
Chapter 28
Nerves had Duncan’s stomach churning as he rapped on the door to Jamie’s apartment. He’d been trying to think of a way to ask her about Denver. It had been constantly on his mind all week. Well, that and seeing her with Max, which still ate him up inside. He didn’t have a great argument for why she should move to Denver, nothing convincing that would get her to agree. He only knew he wanted to be close to his baby.
Dréa’s reasons for wanting to stay in Denver were completely valid, but it felt like she wasn’t taking into consideration how he felt about being away from his child. Why should she, really? She hadn’t signed up for this. She was now in the middle of a situation she didn’t want to be in because of his choice.
It was selfish of him to ask this of Jamie, but he had to give it a try.
When the door opened, the sight of her knocked the wind out of him. Her hair was curled and half twisted up. Her face was made up and lips were glossed. His gaze journeyed down her body and back, taking in her flowery dress and sandaled feet. She looked stunning.
“Hi” was all he could manage.
She fidgeted and glanced behind her nervously. “What are you doing here?”
“Not exactly the greeting I was expecting. I thought maybe we could go get some ice cream and talk. There’s something I want to discuss with you.”
“Oh, well, I …” She glanced back again. “I sort of have … plans, Duncan. Can we do this another time?”
“Plans?” His eyebrows squeezed together, and an uneasiness settled over him. Why was she all dressed up? “Are you—?”
