Her head dropped forward. “I’m sorry.”

He reached over and lifted her chin to get her to look at him. “I’m the one who’s sorry. I’m sorry I couldn’t control myself with you.”

“I feel like I corrupted you or something.” A tear slipped down her cheek, and he brushed it away with his thumb.

The way she was staring at him made his stomach flip. What was this connection between them? Why was it so strong? He lowered his hand and leaned back, giving them a little space.

“I’m happy we’ll be able to share our faith with the baby,” he told her.

“Me too. It’s weird. I’ve never really considered the church or religion of any kind. I didn’t grow up that way, and it seemed like a waste of time. But when I went home, there was something so different about my parents since they started going to church. I could just tell. Mom introduced me to a friend of hers at a family clinic, and she took the time to listen to my fears about this baby and talk to me about my options.”

“I wish you had told me sooner so I could’ve helped you figure things out.”

“I found out right after you came home from Denver. I was scared you’d hate me for messing up the birth control and for putting you in this situation when you just got engaged. And it wasn’t like you were talking to me then.”

He cringed, feeling awful for his behavior.

“But it was a good thing I went home. If I hadn’t, I might not have found Jesus or decided to keep the baby.”

“That’s true.”

She gave him a sweet smile. “I’m kind of excited about the baby now that you and your family know. I was terrified before that I would have to do it all alone, but now I know I won’t.”

“You won’t.” He reached over and took her hand. “I’ll be with you the whole way through this pregnancy, and I think we’ll be amazing parents.”

She shook her head. “This is so weird. I never would’ve thought we’d end up having a baby together.”

He laughed a little. “Me neither.”

“It’s gonna be okay, right?”

He reached up and touched her face without thinking. “More than okay.”

Her fingers wrapped around his wrist, holding his hand in place.

His skin tingled where she touched him, and his heartbeat accelerated.

“Duncan,” Shannon’s voice suddenly called out from the doorway. “You have a visitor.”

Dréa stood just outside the door, staring at them with mouth hung open, clearly disgusted.

Duncan’s hand dropped lightning fast, and his heart jumped into his throat as he stood. “Hey, I thought you flew back with your parents this morning.”

“I can see that.”

He glanced over at Jamie then back at Dréa.

“I changed my mind about going home, so we could talk,” she snapped. “I guess I should’ve gone.”

“No, let’s talk.” He walked toward her.

She spun on her heel as he approached. “I don’t think so.”

“Nothing’s going on with us,” Jamie offered.

Dréa spun around and glared at her. “It sure looked like I was interrupting something.”

Duncan went to Dréa and gently took her arm. “We were talking about the baby is all. And as Jamie said, nothing’s going on between us.”
