“Are you awake?”
Jamie pulled herself to sitting and leaned back against her pillows. “I am now.”
“I’m so sorry. You need your rest. I’ll call you later.”
“Shannon, just tell me why you’re calling.”
Shannon cleared her throat. “I have some news.”
“What news?” She had an idea she already knew.
“It’s too good not to tell you in person. Can I come over?”
“I guess.”
“On my way.” Shannon hung up before Jamie had a chance to reply, and fifteen minutes later, she came knocking, carrying an armful of groceries.
“What’s all this?”
“I brought healthy options. For you and the baby. I heard you might have gestational diabetes and these can only help.”
“Did you empty your entire fridge before coming here?” Jamie watched in awe as Shannon pulled item after item from within the bags she brought.
“Pretty much.”
“You know it hasn’t been confirmed that that’s what I have, right? I have to meet with my doctor in a couple days to take another test.”
“Well, a little healthy eating can’t hurt.”
“True.” She handed Shannon items from another bag, and Shannon went about putting them into the fridge and rearranging things for her. When she had finished, she turned and let out a deep breath. “Are you ready for my big news?”
“You and Micah picked a wedding date,” Jamie guessed.
“Yes, we did, but that’s not it.”
“You picked a date? When?”
“June the tenth. The anniversary of our first date.”
“Aww, that’s so sweet.”
“I know. I’m excited to start planning. I never would’ve imagined that God would bring him back into my life like this after all these years. I love him so much.”
“Really? I couldn’t tell.” Jamie smirked.
Shannon’s dreamy expression gave her away. “Anyway … that wasn’t it.” She stepped forward and took hold of Jamie’s hands.
Jamie was amused by the goofy look on her friend’s face. “What is it?”
“Duncan and Dréa broke up!”
“Wow,” Jamie replied with fake enthusiasm.
“Isn’t this amazing?” She dropped Jamie’s arms and clapped her hands together. “I mean, not that I didn’t like her. She was a wonderful person … but she wasn’t you.”
“Right.”
“Why don’t you sound more excited about this? Honestly, I thought this news might make you faint all over again, which is another reason I wanted to tell you in person.”
