Jamie’s eyes darted around to the other moms seated in the room. “You’re making a scene, Duncan.”
He got to his feet. “You want a scene? I’ll give you a scene!”
“Duncan, sit down!” She gave him the look of death, which made him one-hundred percent positive she would be great at disciplining their kids. Kids? Why was he suddenly thinking about having more kids with her at a time like this?
“Maybe I should wait out here for you,” Max said softly.
“Yeah, maybe you should,” Duncan snapped.
Jamie looked at Max with affection, which pierced Duncan straight through the heart. “That might be best.”
“No problem,” Max replied.
“Jamie Linde,” the nurse called out.
Jamie stood and walked away, ignoring Duncan.
“Hey, sorry, man,” Max told him.
Duncan shook his head and followed Jamie into the exam room. The nurse took all of Jamie’s measurements and left them to wait for the doctor. As soon as the door clicked shut, Jamie ripped into him.
“How could you do that? You humiliated me in front of all of those people in the waiting room, not to mention my boyfriend.”
“Boyfriend?” His heart sank deeper than it already was. “He’s your boyfriend now?”
“Yes, he is. Is that a problem?”
“No.” Yes! He wanted to shout that word, but it wouldn’t come.
“I don’t know why you’re being like this. You have a fiancée. Why can’t I have some happiness too?”
He reached over and took her hand in his. “I want you to have all the happiness in this world, Jamie.”
Her eyes met his, but before he could tell her about him and Dréa, the doctor walked into the room.
“How are we feeling today?” he asked.
“Feeling great,” Jamie said.
“Eh,” Duncan replied, knowing the question wasn’t for him.
Jamie slipped her hand out of his grasp, which saddened him. He longed for that connection, any connection with her.
After all the routine questions and examination, the doctor said, “We’re going to have you take the glucose test today, Jamie.”
“I thought that was done a little later in pregnancy.”
“Sometimes we do it sooner if there’s a higher level of glucose in your urine, and that’s what we’ve found.”
“Should I be concerned?”
“Better to test you now to rule out gestational diabetes.”
“Okay.”
Duncan didn’t like the sound of that, and Jamie began bouncing her knee and chewing on the corner of her lip.
When the doctor left, the nurse returned with a small bottle of orange liquid for Jamie to drink and informed her that she needed to go to the lab and have blood drawn one hour after drinking it. So, along with Max, they headed to the outpatient lab to wait. Together.
